Hello everybody Just noticed today. Happends with any gear, but clearer as speeds builds up. Any idea where it's coming from ? Tracking and alignment was checked last year. Could it be engine mounts failing ? Thank you for you advice Thibaut
I would first check tires pressures; followed by tire condition. If everything checks out ok? then look for worn out bushings in the rear suspension. David
Tires are ok and I checked pressure recently. Looks odd to have worn suspension bushings at 21K miles ?
Measure rolling diameter of tires. They need to be the same and sometimes they are not. The car is sensitive to that.
They reckon you should get your wheel alignment checked every year. Small variations in roads, potholes ect....throw off wheel balance weights and wheels alignments out. I would check the obvious low tyre pressure 1st or worn/mismatched tyres. Then I would get the wheel alignment checked. If thats ok, then it may be a bush ect....worn out. Do the basics 1st.
Well I'm not familiar with working on a 550 but, my 348 was having the same problem. I would hold the wheel straight and mash on the throttle, then the car would pull right. Now if I was still on the throttle and lifted it would pull left. All while holding the stearing wheel perfectly straight. It turned out to be my axles. Whoever the idiot was that put my car together didn't torque down the ring nut properly, that holds the hub shaft to the axle flange. As a result the flange and hub shaft got loose and wore out the splines. This happend on BOTH sides. Once I finished rebuilding them the problem went away. So I would have a look at the condition of your axles. Make sure that there is no play in them.
I agree with Brian... most likely rear tyres... maybe one newer than other... or other difference Also... re-check alignement... 550 has eccentric adjusters.. a knock can shift them if bolts not super dooper tight...
I agree with a couple of the posts - I had a 2000 550 that pulled under acceleration and the problem was low rear tire inflation. To be sure, I increased pressure and problem went away. I then lowered inflation about 5 lbs per side and the problem came back. All that V12 torque is twisting the sidewalls I suppose when the inflation is low...
This may not be an entirely helpful reply, but on my Porsche I picked up a nail in the rear tyre and decided to be miserly by not replacing both tyres on the same axle (I had only done 2000 gentle kilometres). Result: the car skewed horribly to one side under acceleration and then skewed back on lifting off the throttle. Solution: one week of powersliding on right handers, but coasting gently on left handers, and the new tyre was scrubbed down nicely! Have you changed one tyre recently?
Update: One of the rear tire was very low on pressure. Spot on, thanks for advice. I may have a slow puncture now though..... cheers T
