nother dumb question

i have hit the rev limiter a couple times hard, how bad is that? its only happened twice and 2-3 times light.

Is that in the Enzo?
I have a Top Gear video where Tiff reckons the Enzo can safely rev to 10,500RPM but they limit the RPM to prevent the driver from over-revving the engine causing damage and to also get more life from the engines.
Over-revving in any car is not a good thing, but this is a high performance Ferrari engine! Im sure it loves being held on the redline!

 

As long as the car was warmed up im sure its not as bad thing.

 

sorry, yes it was my enzo. and the car was warm, i awalys warm the car to temp, before i go over 3,000 RPM. infact i let it idle 7-10 min before i drive it at all, i'm veruy careful with this car and awalys make sure its more than warmed up before i drive it, i have heard nothing but bad about getting in and going in an Enzo. I dont know how much truth there is to that-I'd like to know but i'll err on the side of caution. thanks again

 

The rev limiter is a safety measure and almost all engines still can hit several hundred higher before damage.

 

Ditto, I don't know that much about over-revving but I'm sure the rev limiter
is set a comfortable distance before there's any possibility of damage.
Although you probably don't want to do it every day!

 

i havent done it in a while, but it happens fast compaired to a Lambo and the car is quiter so it sneeks up on me, i'm sure when i get used to the car it will hardly ever happen. its a handful and takes alot of skill to drive an Enzo, more than I have to get any where close to the potential of the car.

 

Make some good digital recordings of the car hitting the limiter and then post them here. That is the only way we will be able to tell what kind of harm is being done...

Seriously I think the rev limiter is doing its job and that is to protect the engine. If you miss a shift and mechanically push the engine way beyond the redline you will have problems. (I dunno if this is possible with the Enzo's Tranny). Just running in a gear till you hit it, while not nice, shouldn't do damage. There are those here that think that Ferrari's are made of pixie dust and angel fluff and if you actually use them or get them wet they will disintegrate.

 

Give it a try at least once and see what happens. It won't kill the car. You'll probably experience a bit of rough running (cold, thicker oil) and the gearshifts will probably be jerkier, but that's about it. Don't hammer the car cold, just cruise around and see how it feels.

 

If you hold it at the rev limit, obviously the engine will blow up eventually. It would take a good bit of time though.

You can't miss a shift in F1 / SMG gearboxes - it will refuse to downshift any more until the engine is within a safe rev range. Same goes for stalling - if you get slow enough in 6th, it will automatically downshift before the car stalls.
