Might I also suggest going to e-bay & finding the Renwal visible v-8 engine model & building it? The old ones are better than the newer revell. about $50-75 either way.

And if you don't mind the price, the v8 counter part: Renwall Chasis can teach you about suspension & manual trans. But that model tends to be silly expensive now.

A little dated, but wonderful for hands-on. Highly recommended.

 

Agree with Clyde, if all you are interested in is understanding the basics of how engines work, what the parts are, and how they interrelate to one another. But, if you want to learn to work on your car, there is no substitute for getting your hands dirty. No matter how much you read on line, look at videos, talk to people, watch others do things, there is nothing like actually putting a wrench to an engine.

Along those lines, over Thanksgiving weekend, I'm going to be helping a friend of mine pull the engine and transmission out of his 308. If you want to learn about doing mechanical work, come over and help us strip the car down and pull the engine. You'll learn more in 2 days of hands on then you ever will in a month of Sundays reading articles or building models. PM me if you're interested.

 

if your ever in boston(actually harvard area in cambridge), your more then welcome to hang out at our garage, we can even teach you about emissions as we also do inspections

I really don't know why you guys make such a big deal out of doing a little engine work. You want the engine out??? Just grab on and lift!! It really is pretty easy; you should give it a try some time. ;-)
