High Octane Fuel

There is a thread in the Southern California section about a gas station in Rancho Santa Fe that has just started selling 100 octane gasoline.

I was curious of what are the actual benefits of using the fuel in the long run in a street car? I know that you get better performance while it's in there, but would it be good for the car just to put a tank of it in every now and then to clean it out?
