I keep seeing this car and the money they are asking. It seems a bit strong for this car. What r your comments? This is in the FCA Classifieds. Is the owner on this site?

1994 348 tb Challenge, s/n 98843. Black interior. 20,000 miles. Special edition plaque of number 18 of 32 built in 1994. No track time! Perfect condition. Comes with the Challenge exhaust and stock exhaust, Speedline wheels with the 8” slick tires. Racing OMP rollbar, OMP racing seats, 4-point OMP seat belts. You can turn from street car to racing car in hours! The sound it makes, you’ll never hear one like it. Must see! All service performed. $70,000. Call (303)667-0136 (CO).

It's a B, which I like and, oops, it doesn't say what ext. color. Maybe black. [CORRECTION: I looked it up and it is red.] I was kind of thinking around $60-$62K which is pretty strong for a 348 coupe anyway.

This kind of money will buy me a 355B, so what justifies the premium?

It's a challenge car, perhaps the highest refinement of the 348..many carbon fiber parts and others built especially for this short production car. The Challenge series this car was built for was one of the ultimate "gentleman racer" experiences. Of all the 348s, this is the most likely, IMO, to have investment value.

According to what I have, this is a legitamate challenge car. Challenge cars were the end of the production of 348. 32 tb's and 13 ts's in '94. The "best" of the 348. They did not have any carbon fiber components. They had stiffer suspension and lighter fiberglass front and rear bumpers.

Records show no challenge kit installed in this one. Originally red with black interior. The 348 CH originally came with regular leather interior and stock 17in. wheels. There were mounting points for the roll cage and harness, but did not come from factory with them(illegal in US street).

"No track time"? Why does it have 18 in. slicks, challenge exhaust, full roll cage, harness and racing seats installed.

Not that it matters much (except the price), but mine was supposed to have never been raced, but it was. I bought it last Oct for much less than $70K with 13K miles.

Only the Competizione's had Carbon/Kevlar parts. This is a Challenge car, ie a customer only race series not intended for actual competition ie Le Mans.

The track competizione's are worth about £70-£100,000+ pounds.

I have a street competizione which was the homogolation special to enable the race versions to compete at Le Mans etc. It also includes many of the C/K parts.

Quite right. I inadvertently called it a Comp car in the heading above, but could not change it when I discovered my mistake. That said, do we agree that the asking price is stout? What's everyone's opinion of what is reasonable? Armed with this, I might just call them to discuss and offer. I restate my opinion of $60-$62 being reasonable, but honestly, this is starting to overlap 355's.

And while not raced, it appears that this was someone's track car, so I expect it has some "harder" miles on it.

For the record, I thought the seats were CF or Kelvar, maybe its kelvar I am thinking of for sure, also I thought the front and rear bumper had some of the same.

If you think the price point is close to 355 territory now, wait a few more yrs when this 348 becomes more expensive to buy than all 355 (excluding the Fiorano)

Based on its production number, and the high priduction number of the 355, if you can verify everything, then i think its priced correct. After all, where is there another one for sale in the market right now?

The 348 challenge seats were fiberglass. I called the dealer and they are still available $1500/seat new. The 355/360 had carbon fiber and about $3000/seat.

The front and rear bumpers on the 348 ch (kit and factory installed) were fiberglass. They are about 100lbs. lighter per bumper and do not have 5mph impact ability. Some contention with the factory challenge cars as these might have been illegal on US roads.

And ? most of these cars listed are fake anyways. I love these car adds.

They always have a great deal, then you call them up and they tell you the car was sold. Sales gimmick.

PS, where is this beauty, im on there right now an dont see anything fo 40k that says 94 challenge?

Dude, read a bit deeper. It's the 2nd one from the bottom, Prestige Imports car in UT. Go to their web site at www.PrestigeImportsOnline.com to see more. They have no history and say it was raced. $40K seems pretty cheap to me unless it was crashed heavily and needs everything replaced.

I had a great convo with the dealer. Nice guy and honest - kind of surprising. Here's the short shot:

He wasn't sure what a Challenge car was so I gave him my take. The car was tracked. He drove it and it needs mechanical attention. Brakes/rotors for sure. The car is fitted with the Challenge racing stuff. A/C is there (go figure) and works but not cold (recharge?). The exhaust is straight pipes - no telling if the cats are there, but he doesn't think so. It was owned by a multi-level marketing company who used it as a sales incentive to the top sales people - they got the car for a week. Paint is shiny but shows orange peel on nearly every panel - possible body damage all over. Might be crash damage, but who can tell? No rust. The seats are after market Corbeau and not comfortable. The wheels are aftermarket 19's (probably worth more than the car!) and the stock Challenge ones are gone. The interior is messy - pass door doesn't open and power window won't open (may not be a big deal).

I asked him for pictures of the engine bay and transaxle. Maybe we can see more after he posts them.

This looks like an intriguing project car to restore - is it worth restoring Challenge cars, or do just discard them? My mental tab for mechanicals alone is $10K (brakes, cats and exhaust) not counting trans or clutch work. Scary.

Looks like an extra wide gap from the door to the front fender.

Rear bumper seems to be pushed in a bit..you can tell by looking at rear wheel well.

piece in front of headlights seems to be out of line.

I could live with a little body work being imperfect if nothing major was wrong mechanically if it could be gotten for 35k or so.

Brakes don't have to be done at an expensive Ferrari place and window door thing may be easy fix.

In Florida we have no emissions test so how would they know about cats?

Get a PPI and price in a major and just maybe..

Wheels look good maybe add 15mm spacer to rear though.

Is the Challenge emblem on the correct side on the rear deck lid? Mine's on the right I think, without looking.

It was the deer slayer. I think it was the 348 challenge that hit a deer at Road Atlanta. I think driven by Scott Neuman as #70 through Miller Motor Cars.

Now that is a mystery, eh? Anyway, I'm running away from this one - no patience for a proper restoration.
