Microsoft is worthless, I've been going through their Outlook Express 6 documentation and support center for 30 minutes and nothing specific to what I imagine is a common need.

I have PST files from years of using my other laptop. Now Jennie's lap top has Outlook Express 6, but it isn't picking up the PST files. I have them all in a directory and nothing with the File - Import is working.

I would rather just open them up as they were, but maybe with OE6 they have to be imported to read?

Any help would be appreciated. I thought I was using Outlook on other computer, but maybe it was Exchange? Are PST file specific to certain MS email program and/or version? Looks like everything in OE6 goes to a dbx file.

    Thanks,
    rob

Outlook and Outlook Express are not the same program. PST files must be opened by Outlook (and some third party programs that generally cost $$$). Outlook Express can't open a pst file.

Put Mozilla Thunderbird on the machine that has Outlook, import them from Outlook to T-Bird, then copy the T-bird Profile from that machine to the machine you want them on.
The dump Outlook/Outlook Express and go with T-bird.

You have to be kidding, Microsoft doesn't have a conversion between two of its largest email applications!?!

That is the most asinine thing I've ever heard.

Easiest might be to install my license of Outlook on the new machine and just use it or at least to view the old emails.

Can you use OWA to dial into your outlook exchange account? If so you should be able to access your PST files.

Or you can call me and I can sell your company an Email Archiving solution so you will never have to use PSTs again.
    ;)

    Cheers!

Something I've done (which will only be feasible if you don't have many large attachments in your original emails) is to open the PST in Outlook > Select/highlight all the messages in the preview pane > Click the “Forward” button. This adds all the old messages to a new email as individual attachments, which can then be forwarded to and opened in your Outlook Express.
When I did it, I gave the new email a Subject of “OLD EMAILS” so that I could easily find them in the future on my new email program...which happens to be Entourage on a Mac.

    Good luck.

OWA (Outlook Web Access) is awesome! I just started using it.

How would this help me? Or does Microsoft still have two email packages? Outlook and Outlook Express.

1 Email package (exchange) 2 front end systems variants.

Express is just that. Its the no frills approach to email access. Kinda like going shopping at a 7-11 for a weeks worth of groceries. It may have most of what you need but not everything.

Ask your system admin for OWA access and or VPN access to your mailbox on the exchange server. This will give you full access to exchange like "real" outlook.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Scott

I'm just going to install Outlook like I have on my other laptop. Now will Outlook read the Outlook Express dbx file?

It should be able to import the Outlook Express data file.

BTW, you cannot open a .pst file with OWA. However, having OWA would imply that you are using Outlook with an Exchange Server. In Rob's case, it sounds like he's using it in POP/IMAP mode and not Corporate mode.
