As i was refuelling the 997 today, it asked me to put oil as the level was low.

I put 2 liters and the level is still low as seen here in the pic . Pb is, Shell didnt have the Oil recommended by the owners manual , i had to put in 5W40..

The Oil tank capacity is 8.25 Liter ..Is there any danger to drive it until i find proper oil ? And what can cause this, as i dont think 2 liters is minimum level..

There is no way to check the level manually too !???

My Boxster always said it was low when I would fill up. If your garage is level, put your key in and check the reading without starting. If it is still low you're OK to drive for a bit.

I recognize your guages as a 997, I believe. I have a 997S and loooove the car. Anyway, don't jack around get oil in the car and fast. Walmart carries the required oil as does Autozone. Continue adding a quart at a time as you get readings between each quart. Yes, put a quart in and take a reading. Put anoter quart in, etc. You want to have it with no more than one bar empty. USE THE REQUIRED OIL as stated in your owners manual. I use Mobil 1 5-40 synthetic. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I had to put Mobil ! 5 30 as the Mobil station didnt have either 40 or 50 and i didnt know where to go to get them ( im new in town ).

Do you any other places where i can get this oil ? I did Shell, Mobil and other stations and they didnt have the oil Porsche recommend.

Also, there is no way to check the oil manually correct ? You have to use the online comp ? It made me wait 10 mns, twice to get the reading..

Oil changing places might have it, especially if you can find a Mobil oil changing station. Also Autozone.

I haven't been able to find the 10w-40 at all, although the dealers around here certainly have it. I still use 15w-50, which is what came in my car originally; but it doesn't get as cold here in Texas as other places. Walmart sometimes has 15w-50.

    Andrew.....

Looks like you have 3,450 miles on the odometer in the pic.....therefore being down 2-3 litres is on par with the mileage driven.......they use about a quart every 1,000 miles......it is normal.......is that what you meant by what could cause this ?

Also, when checking the oil level......was the engine at normal operating temperature, and were you parked on level ground ? Overfilling these cars can cause an expensive repairs.

A quart every 1000 miles is normal on a 997? Wow, 986 Boxsters are known for using virtually no oil. That sounds like a lot. My 996TT used oil at a little bit faster than that rate, but turbos are known for drinking the oil.

I checked so many times..and in so many different places, i was really worried as the last segment was blincking even after i put 1 liter.

My dealer called me back and said i should be fine with what i put.

I check with the car at running temp ( the light came on as i was refuelling adter a 12 miles drive so the car was at 200 temp) and parked on level ground.

All in all i put 2 liters yesterday and today , it showed 3/4 full ...

Thanks for all the help :) !!
