Why is a Rolex inferior to an Ademars Piquet (sp?)? How many Rolex Yachtmaster in 18k are made yearly? How many of any particular model AP are made? I agree that the Rolex is more common overall, but there are Rolex models that are fairly rare. Is there something AP does in the construction that makes it more handcrafted / special than a Rolex? I really don't know, but your comments seem to paint with a fairly broad brush. I know one reason many believe Ferrari is better than a Caddy is due to the craftsmanship and price. What price range does the AP sell for compared to Rolex / Breitling? BT
Rolex mass produces their movements, a watchmaker really doesn't spend much time with any Rolex movement. It's more of an assembly line atmosphere. Total Certified Chronometers by Rolex in 2004: 628,556 watches Breitling gets their movements from ETA, the largest producer of watch movements in Switzerland, owned by the swatch group. They make millions of movements a year. Also mass produced, no attention from a watchmaker. Total Certified Chronometers by Breitling in 2004: 226,796 Audemars Piguet movements are made in house and assembled by a watchmaker. Last I read they made roughly 15,000 watches in 2005. That's not a hard number like the Breitling and Rolex numbers though. General range for Rolex is ~ $4,500 - 18,000 if you don't count gem settings. The most complicated watch just has a chronograph. General range for Breilting is $1,500 - 6,000 if you don't count gem settings. Also the chronograph is really their highest complication. They just started making a Bentley model with a Tourbillon. General range for an Audemars Piguet is $9,000 - 100,000+++. Their watches include every complication known, from Chronograph, Big Dates, Tourbillons, Minute Repeaters, etc... Does that help out at all?
Rolex builds a great watch but a statement like this is amazing. My dealer stated to me that Rolex has now become the perfect mall watch, and always sells great in those locations. Most uninformed people still feel Rolex is the finest watch built and there are no others, they need to grab a watch book and open their horizons. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I really don't want to knock Rolex. It is a very well built watch and has a great history. They are known around the world, and by laypeople as well. Just being surround by watches all day long, it's hard to be impressed by them. Mainly because of their lack of complications. They certainly have the the R&D and money needed to make some interesting watches. Why not add something simple to their lineup like a Big Date or Power Reserve meter. (Their new Cellini Prince has a dual time feature) What I didn't know until I got more into watches, is that Rolex used to make some decently complicated watches. The one below has a calendar and moonphase. Now why they stopped in beyond me. I guess, why innovate when you can make profit on keeping just a handful of calibers you use in every model and can produce very easily... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm with you, Rolex needs to stop holding on to their same old designs and marketing strategies, others are just passing them by with better designs, movements, and larger diameter watches. If they built a 44mm SD I would be all over it, along with many other people.
Hey Peter, I am kinda worried about the AP brand right now. It seems that it is the new buzz watch to have in hollywood/rap world. All the songs mention AP now. I previously loved Brietling but now everyone knows what one is and in my book is just another mass produced watch. Even though the AP's are bleeding expensive and limited produced, do you think they could be overexposed?
Yeah I know what you mean. Once Jay Z outed himself as a huge AP fan, the hip-hop world seemed to follow. Think there are 3 or 4 current songs mentioning Audemars. I've also heard Patek mentioned in a few songs as well... Well there's always Vacheron Constantin To answer your question, no. The watches are too expensive for the fans to purchase, maybe we'll just see more artists wearing them. -Peter
It has been going on for years, Stallone with Panerai, Arnold, JZ with AP and the countless others with Rolex and other brands. Now if AP starts building a 60mm diamond incrusted watch with a quartz movement we are all in trouble. I could care less who is wearing it or what its value is now or could be in the future (Watches are not the best investment) and will always look towards quality and the smile factor.
The watch companies love it. Look how many watches are made for celebs. All the Slytech Panerai's for Stallone, AP Royal Oak Offshore Jay Z, AP ROO End of Days, T3, and others for Arnold. All of which fetch higher than retail now

Hey everyone. I'm not very knowledgeable about watches. I'm looking into getting a nice watch that I can wear with a suit, yet wear casually everyday and going out at night. My price range is around $1500-$2500. What I am looking for: Steel/Titanium bracelet White face Diamond bezel (perhaps diamonds on every hour as well) Something that is classy, yet not overly flashy. I tried on a Breitling with a diamond bezel (not sure what model) but it was way over my budget. It was priced at $9300. I don't know if a diamond bezel is possible for my price range. Like I said, I don't know much about watches. So any help in the right direction would be appreciated. Brands, specific models, etc. Everything would be appreciated!
I think you are a bit low even for a pre-owned with out diamonds. I'm not sure how you have diamonds on a watch and don't want it flashy.....
I'm a semi-ignoramus with a few nice watches, nothing over the top- what's the story on the movement and the collectability- F.A. Jones Portuguese (in Rose Gold)? I tend to buy 'used'- what's the market on this piece?
