So true...while a Ferrari may give a different driving experience like us FChatters love, nothing beats a Porsche for reliable super car performance
If you really wanted to, you could drive a Porsche year round (in the snow in my case..canada brr cold). The whole Porsche line up really represents a sports car that you could use everyday if you wanted to. To me, the 911 will always be the face of Porsche and the sports car to have.
Great cars? Yes-although me thinks they are starting to lose their focus-Cayennes, 4 doors sedans, and no top shelf racing programs...... Exotic? No Must admit that the values of 996s are tempting but is there anything better than a modded 930????
Very nice read - although the author tends to be a bit narrow in focus with regard to street sports cars. Many comments below the article ultimately express more 'reality' than the article itself. Good link!
So? You can expand your progam and maintain your focus. The 997 and the Cayman prove this. There is also that little problem that Porsche remains independent and wishes to stay that way. Presently they're pretty much the only major sports car company that can say that. The day the answer to that question matters for anything, shoot me. No there is not.
And FYI, Ferrari has won 14 F1 Manufacturers Championships compared to Porsche's uh...umm...none. Oh, and another FYI, Ferrari has 24 FIA GT race wins to Porsche's 2. But I'm sure they were all by cheating!
Porsche's focus under Wiedeking? Build and sell more vehicles. It certainly hasn't been on the top levels of racing...
The TAG F1 team won the WCC using a Porsche engine twice(1985 and 1986) and was 2nd twice(1984 and 1987) and then pulled out of F1 claiming they have proven all they needed to prove in that series... http://www.motorsportsetc.com/info/prost.htm
Which is good, I certainly wish that the company remain open for business than have a great racing program, wouldn't you all agree? An as far as not having an exoctic, you are joking right?
Uh, I don't quite understand the statement? Porsche hasn't competed in the GT1 class since 1999 I believe. Porsche GT3-RSs, run by various teams, took the FIA GT2 championships in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2001 a Ferrari 360 run by JMB racing took the championship and this year a Ferrari 430 run by AF Corso took the championship.
Nobody's talking about Porsche going out of business, question in my mind is whether they will ever dominate (compete?) in the top classes of racing again or rest on their laurels... 20 years from now will we be reading about the companies racing successes at the end of the 20th century or more recent ones?? As for the Carrera GT Porsche stopped production in April 2006 after producing fewer than 1300 cars; some of the cars are still available, allegedly under MSRP. Check out the Rennlist site. It was a oneshot deal....
Read Ludwigsen's 3 volume treatise on Porsche, especially the chapters concerning the failed Indycar program and the disasterous F1 V-12.
Parker-Porsche powered 3 straight champions, Lauda in 84, Prost in 85 and 86. If I recall correctly, Ludwigsen's book cited the looming Honda threat as one of the underlying reasons of Porsche's pullout, but I'll have to confirm that...
why doesnt anyone take a 997tt and rebody it in swoopy ital style carbon fiber? similar to enzo rebody done by mr g but to be accomplished at more 'reasonable' cost'
Take a look at the Ruf version of the Cayman; it's not only italian design, but the beauty is more than skin deep. BTW, the longer I am around their cars, the less concern I have that the Porsche is not 'exotic' enough. The new GT3 is going to be fabulous. And, for those who want a little more history, how about a 993 RS? Gorgeous, in my estimation.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
