Jim Patterson told me they built an 800 crank hp turbo car and it worked, so.... He said the trans parts are very similar to the 512 and it's good to 1100-1200. I'll post the head info as I get it and dyno numbers when it's running again. Engine in the den uhh?....my wife doesn't even let me walt through the house with car parts sometimes common sense is not one of my strong points I like the haltechs, you get a lot for the money. It does some things better than the motec, like the load points. Haltech gives you 32, motec only 21 and on a boosted engine the extra points make the tuning come out better. But the motec does things the haltech won't, like cylinder tuning and traction control. I really struggle with this purchase. There is just flat no way I could justify a motec at the US prices, they're insane. An M800 is like $5500 with the a flying lead harness and computer cable. I ordered from Oz for 1/2 the US price.
Yes it is My baby must must must be running before May.....when my wife tells me our baby is coming. I was actually thinking about that today....the 1 thing the carb engines had over an EFI engine is now gone.
It is a clean engine! and my wife is an angel. I will post some pics of it. I am getting anxious just staring at it even though it makes a nice piece of art furniture, although she does not think so!
Life is so unfair sometimes....my wife is trying to take part of the shop for an exercise room. I had a weak moment and ordered the traction control option to go with the m800...I figured while I'm doing the wiring, I might as well get it all done. It was $90 AU$, so I guess that's about $375. I'm going to have to install wheel speed sensors, which will be a pain, but in the end I'm think it will be worth it. It's suposed to do launch control too.
MIke, If I read the previous post correctly, you're going to be a father? Congratulations to both of you!!
I hear ya, I am very lucky for sure to have a wife that loves Ferrari nearly as much as I do. She is not to keen on my boat though! I am still working on that. You did well on the prices for sure on the Motec. I was quoted nearly $8000 when i was doing the engine. It seems very doable at your prices. How many hours do you think it would take to put in a new harness for our cars? I was told I basically had to start all over going from the Haltech to the Motec? Traction control option is a wise idea assuming it will work as well as advertised? Especially at the HP numbers your talking. In fact you would benefit immensely from it now. And you might as well do it now or you will regret it later! We all do. Paul
Nothing to be scared about. This has been going on for generations...... (Then again, there are the teenage years..)
I think the US price is about $5500 for the M800 plus $1500 for a custom harness, plus install time. The quote you got seems about right. In australia, the M800 is $2450. I bought a flying lead wiring harness for $175, it is a plug for the M800 and 3 meters of wire. Then I need to route them, trim them to length, and put the correct conectors on (which I need to buy separately...maybe $100). I think the full install time will be 15-20 hours...so I'll allow myself 40 . If you already have an ECU wired in, you coud just change the plu on the harness you have to fit the new ECU and it would do everything it does now. To get full use, you probaly don't have enough wires in your harness, so you'd probably want to replace it. It's not hard, it just takes time to make everything neat. Yeah, it could use it now...and hopefully it does work well. I'll post something about it when I get the car back out and running. The option is just an activation code, so it can be added any time, but I figured while I've got stuff ripped apart to run wires, I might as well get it all done.
I wish Chris!, Tell that to my back. Even with the heads off and no crank and internals, it is a bear to move. I had the bungees wrapped around it to camoflage it under an old car cover. I would love to find a Ferrari engine stand for it. No such luck, YET. that way i can move it into the living room and call it modern art. Paul
Thanks for the info mark and congrats on the baby. I sure like the sound of the Oz prices for the Motec. Paul
Mark, Don't be scared. It's probably like dying. Once you're dead it's not so bad. Seriously though, it WILL change your life. I've got 5 kids. Three with the first wife and two with the second wife ( who likes Ferraris). I was the guy who was never going to have kids but after reluctantly giving in on having the first kid you find out it's not so bad and what the F***, you decide it's OK to have another. Good luck with the Motec. It'll be interesting finding out about the results. Both results actually! Consider them both adventures! Wil
Thanks Wil Hey Vic's says it's best, but I don't think I gave you the address. It's: [email protected]
If anyone is thinking of ordering a motec from Australia..... it turns out that something about ordering expensive auto parts for a foreign country sets off all the alarms at the credit card company. I had to talk to 4 different people to get the card turned back on and get the ECU paid for. It all worked out in the end though.
While the engine is out I decided to have a good look at the frame. The right rear had a ton of shims in the lower rear mount and the bushings were clearly all pulled and twisted. I notince the right rear fender has been changed too, so I'm guessing it got wacked a bit. After quite a bit of measuring, the only thing that seemed wrong was front mount point for the upper control arm. So, I got out the come-a-long....and broke the come-a-long. Down to walmart for a new come-a-long., this time a 2 ton version. I also got out the torch this time. 15 minutes later, everything matches the drawing again, I just need to repaint it. The first stop when it rolls out again in the spring will have to be the alignment shop, but everything seems right now. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
My latest ebay purchase came today. I've had rotors for a few years but haven't gotten around to finding calipers and installing them. To do the traction control I need to mount sensors and such, so I figured now is the time for the brakes. I found a set of stupid big 6 piston calipers for the front on ebay last week. I need to buff the "p" word off of course, but other than that I think they should do the trick nicely. Now I just need to find something for the back. I'm thinking I like the silver....I my go yellow, but I kind of like the subtlety of the silver Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think I'm going to build a new intake to better match the head work I'm doing. If anyone is interested in my supercharger set-up before I put it on ebay, let me know. The price is $8500.
I'm surprised no one picked up on this comment, or am I just so ignorant I don't get it? Actually that is likely since I'm just learning about turbos and SCs. So... can someone please enlighten me as to why you can't use a tank of compressed air as a source of forced induction. Assume you have a turbo that can supply 40 psi at times (maybe higher - I don't know much about turbos) and you use it to fill an air tank via an intercooler. When you want boost you draw from the air tank and a pressure regulator gives you a continuous 15 psi (or whatever you want) with the added advantage that the air cools even further as it goes from 40 psi to 15 psi and gives up latent heat. Obviously the bigger the tank the better this would work, but the more space it would require for the tank. So, why wouldn't this work? Oh... you make think this is a stupid question but it's not because I asked it...
