Factory Restoration of 1983 308GTS 45563

I've been watching this thread to for a little while. I'm very interested to see the progress or what the status is. That would be awesome to have a car rebuilt AND certified by Ferrari. Sure, this could be done locally, but damn, awesome to get the Ferrari stamp of approval!

 

You can send in item ID numbers......same thing....

It's not like they swapped VIN #s to match race programs....

Only if it matched a nice vacation, would it make any sense.......

 

I Agree. I hope it works out for you there Matt. It's a pretty cool program Ferrari has started there.

They probably sent these factory e-mails to everyone they had info on thinking they were gonna get responses from only the more expensive Ferraris. They're trying to figure out what to do with a response from a 308 owner.

You know they're thinking 80 to 100 grand restos not 20 and 30 grand touch ups.

 

Irrespective of what matt does or doesn't do, whoever thought of this program should be commended for it. It is a great idea! Great for the owners who want the cert and great for Ferrari who, undoutedly, will be paid handsomely for their services.

 

I'll bet they are happy to take money and do a restoration on any Ferrari you send them, even if it is a "lowly" (by your standard, apparently!) 308.

There will come a day when 308s are expensive vintage cars, and that day is coming.

i just wasted 1/2 hour of my life.

 

Restore it to perfection yourself but don't inflate the tires and leave off the valve stem caps. Then tell Ferrari to perform a Factory Restoration. They'll put factory air in the tires and charge you for original valve stem caps. Then you have a Certified Factory Restoration, there was not much work to do for them, but still!

As to Matt, met him once and was a real nice guy, so I say let's give him some slack.

 

Good point. Having Italian Factory air in the tires should add about $15K to the resale value. The factory probably has a certification with pictures of the kid that sweeps the floors putting air in the tires and the inspection of a Sr. mechanic that probably follows that task and checks off the 'do sheet'

 

I'll repeat what I said earlier to Noah - go check out this month's issue of Forza magazine in which there is an article on the factory restoration program. On Page 45, you'll see a full-page photograph of a *GREEN 400i* being worked on in a "stall" between a 275GTB and something from the 1950's that looks very red, and very valuable - perhaps an old Monza or something of the like?

That said, if they're doing sub-$20k (USD) 80's V12s, I highly, *HIGHLY* doubt that they're turning away quality 308QVs.

 

So, here's one for the board.....

Surely it would be great to have but how many of you guys will actually line up to buy $90-120K "Factory certified" 308's?

 

And, they had better put a hologram (or something similarly unique) on the "Cert" or you'll have every EBAY bozo on the internet selling "Factory Certified" 308's with bogus documentation!

 

My guess is there will be an ID number that you are supposed to cross reference with the factory.

You already know the answer to that - nobody! HOWever - how many cars do you see on the market in the low-100's range with ads like, "recent body-off, bare metal restoration; over $100k in receipts,"? I believe I've seen a few recently....Countaches, Boxers, Dinos, etc. The "it" cars right now.

Those people aren't advertising the "market price" of their car + what they paid in restoring it - they're only advertising it for what the current market will bear! While a few psychos have reportedly paid north of $225k for an early LP400 Countach (and maybe understandably so), that's just the value of the car....not 100K for the car and another $125k for a restoration. Who knows where that will be in 5-10 years on 308s? Probably a few bucks higher than now, but not likely in the 90-100k range.

So....those individuals who've chosen to put that kind of money into their 308 have done so more likely as a labor of love and not as an investment. Hell - a Tubi for my 308GT4 would be nearly 20% the value of the car alone! Could I expect to get that back at the time of sale if I were to sell next week? Doubtful... The next owner should would be lucky, though!

 

I think this program is great. I think even 308 people may take avantage of this. Lets assume the following:

1) your dream car is the 308 gtb/s
2) you want a "new" fcar for reliability or other reasons and can afford a new 430 but the design doesn't make your heart pound like the 308
3) You can acheive your dream car by buying a decent example, send it to Ferrari and have them rebuild and refinish everything and have it restored to "new" condition.

It seems to me in these circumstances, because you are getting essentially a new car, albeit an old design, even if it costs a total of $100K you would be getting a good deal, perhaps a bargain. What is 1978s $30,000 worth in today's dollars?...gotta be at least $100K.

 

As I said before, I think the program is great as well. I think it is a terrific way for Ferrari to further market themselves and generate revenue in their niche. Ferrari is all about pedigree and this program can only further it.

I dunno, it's just hard to fathom spending (maybe) 30-50K to restore a 30K car that, while surely an icon due to it's exposure on a popular TV show, will most likely never be considered a true collectible due to the numbers in which it was originally produced. But then again, maybe a low mile, "barnyard find", fiberglass 308 or a car that was owned by one's father from new?

5 years? No. 10 years? Absolutely. I will predict right now that a 308 will be a $100K+ car by the year 2016. In five more years, I predict that you will be able to swap a good 308 for a good 355 even trade.

So what is the estimate for all the work you outlined, or is it simply $80 an hour and when its done its done and pay up?

The whole time reading this i wonder why anyone would consider this? For the money spent you could buy a 76 fiberglass dry sump which will be worth more any day of the week. That and keep your allready nice GTS to boot.
