carrera gt

anybody have a carrera gt ? would love to hear some feedback on the car. prices have really been falling but can't imagine they go too much lower fo thinking of taking a look at one. seems to be you can buy a very low mie 2004 for around 310-330k.

 

To cut a long story short this is probably the worlds finest sports car (without exception). Beautifully styled without "excess", sensational performance, a TRULY spine-tingling exhaust/engine note and what you really pay for, unbelievable dynamics (AND it's built to jewel-like quality.)

I would add that it is not straightforward to drive (as say an Enzo) but the car dynamic responses are incredible. It much closer to being a racecar for the road than anything since the F40, it resists understeer with mega mechanical grip, the steering is razor sharp, the throttle response is INSTANTANEOUS (thanks to the cutting edge drive train) and the brakes are awesome.
Irrespective of it's current value it's only REAL rival is the Enzo. I've heard idiots on this board compare it to the 430... as I said...... they're idiots.

 

Definitely would concur with MB's comments: fabulous chassis, great power delivery, very well balanced and awesome handling. Construction and development is Enzo like, at less than 1/3rd the price. Actually, far more controllable than my GT-2, but one must be very judicious with throttle control on apex/track out or nasty things can (and have happened). Very easy to rotate the car through brakes and throttle, but one must be careful to truly enjoy and appreciate. IMHO - many of the wrecks involving the CGT resulted from mashing the throttle (as opposed to squeezing) as the car is at or near apex, or sharp throttle lift off while turning and at healthy speeds.

I have a 430 spyder and love the car; at the same time, can't understand why a used CGT is about the same price. There is no comparison between the two??

 

that's what is making me think the price should hold around here, it's starting to cross price points w/ the 430 spyder. while the 430 is an amazing car it will be replaced in a few yrs w/ a new model while it will be quite a while if ever that porsche makes a gt replacement

 

I may have posted this before, but as one with an F430 spider and CGT in our household, I can say the CGT is amazing and On The Track -- just great at the limits. The CGT does not, however, translate as well on the street. In fact, it can be - at times - like driving on marbles - the F430 is really much different and inspires much more confidence on the street. Having said that, I have not tracked my F430 Spider yet, but I know I won't be able to lap faster than the CGT, but that is not the point of the F430 (nor the CGT).

In that last 6 months I had a few near misses on the road with inattentive drivers in the CGT and when I reacted quickly the CGT bit back - once having me in a 180. Interestingly, this was just reported re: an accident with a CGT today -

The Carrera GT is lovely, I havent driven one. But i have seen them in person and had a sit in a few of them. Lovely car, although the only two downsides in my opinion, 1. is that the interior seems a bit plasticy on some models, 2. its depricated a fair bit. Although saying that, there arent many for sale in the UK at the moment.

The other thing to watch out for is to try and get the 05/06 year cars, as i have heard they have an improved clutch, as the earlier cars had harsh clutches. Im not 100% sure on this, but i have heard it a few places.

I've seen in person the CGT in Yellow, Silver and Black. Each time, I have really liked them, the sound is just something else. I've also heard that the back end can be a bit of a handful.

Having driven the CGT several times and an owner of a 430 Spider, I believe this post accurately describes the differences in the two cars. Make no mistake, the 430 Spider is not in the same league as the CGT in performance. However, the CGT is very difficult to drive fast and I found the comment that it is like driving on marbles a pretty good description. It is possible as Thusly has indicated that injudicious use of the throttle may be the culprit but the fact remains with a average to good driver on city streets the CGT is not in its element. It is a car for the very experienced track driver.

On the other hand, the 430 is very easy to drive fast safely. That may also explain the comparable values of the two cars. Another point to consider is maintenance cost. The CGT eats tires, brake pads, requires a valve adjustment at 20,000 miles (very labor intensive) and despite claiming that the clutch is bullet proof several have been replace at an average cost of $20,000.

 

you really talk a lot about CGT, did you ever drove one ? just curious
also, how come in 2 face to face tests with CGT (one danish and one brit) Enzo was the winner ?

 

I have driven the C-GT also, not impressed at all. I own an F430, G-SE, & 997TT.

I would have bought the C-GT if I liked it (I didn't) difficult to get in & out of, finicky clutch, high maintenance = no go. Rumor from an accurate source says they are all being shipped back to Germany for re-distribution.

Act fast if you want one, but I can't imagine why. It looks & sounds cool, that's all I can say positive. And I love Porsches!

I forgive your scepticism.Yes, I've (briefly) driven a car which was owned by someone who also had an Enzo.
The Porsche is a cutting edge in some way (technology and build) and old school (DEMANDS a driver that knows what he is doing - 6 speed manual tranny, race-style clutch, VERY close gate gearbox (easy to put it into 4th instead of 2nd for example), rapid engine rev reduction/escalation, very relaxed traction control).
It IS a scary car, there is no doubt - but so are racecars and the Carrera GT is basically a road-going Le Mans car with as few compromises as possible (INCLUDING driver commitment/skill).

The stunning Enzo is fabulous but by contrast I remember it like this:
turn key, push start button, pull right paddle up, and DRIVE etc...etc Like an owner on the board has already stated, his grandmother could drive one. Too easy for such a great car.

CGT is also amongst the fastest cars in the world on the 'ring. I don't put much faith in Top Gear laptimes. Conditions/drivers are all very different on their tests.

Ferraris Enzo is yet to set a time although I heard a ***rumour*** Ferrari won't officially set one because they think know the Enzo is not as quick around the ring (apparently it's suspension can't cope with some of the heavily cambered sections whose names have slipped my mind). I think the average supercar drive would be quicker in an Enzo.

It's residuals are explained easily. Someone with £320,000 to spend does not want to be frightened by his car....

 

I'm curious, how difficult is the clutch to get used to. I've heard it is very easy to stall when starting out. Some have said no big deal, others have said they got rid of it for this reason.

Stef, not that you need my agreement, but you are right on the money here. I got several test drives in different situations with the C-GT and chose the 430 Spyder without a blink. The C-GT is simply a very poor street car for all its magnificent attributes. And the difficulty and expense of upkeep make it far less than ideal on the track as well.

Simply stated, it is an engineering tour de force with nowhere to go. If I had nothing else to do with my money I might have bought it. If I liked it, I would have bought it. But it is definately a fifth or sixth car in the stable from my perspective.

It doesn't take long to acclimate to the clutch. However, I never found just releasing the clutch slowly without throttle very worthwhile. Also, given the very low front end and the quirky clutch, I would hate to own one of these in San Francisco and any hilly town.

On the track it is something in the hands of a good driver( Walter Rouhl the great rally and Porsche factory driver had input into the design of the car. Yet, he crashed two of them and insisted at at least a modicum of stability control before releasing it to the public.) Its rewards are immense if you can live to talk about it.

 

Indeed! The article said that the owner had taken in the car for some *minor* work done (the $7-8K figure), and that upon being returned the accident caused some MAJOR work requirement! My guess from just looking at the pic, and knowing how insanely expensive carbon-fibre work is, I'd say $150k+.
