    A little different twist on the exhaust question. I have a very stock US Spec 1979 308 GTB. I would like to put the Cats in a box, mostly for fire safety reasons. I won't complain about improved performance, but that is not my primary objective. I do not want to change the stock exhaust otherwise.

    My questions is this...what is the best testpipe out there for the money? Should I get some fabricated locally or are the name brand pipes worth the money; and why?

    P.S. I have searched this subject but did not find the answer I was looking for. I have not had a great deal of luck with searching this database though.

    The "best" is of course subjective, but I think you'll be happier with a Stebro (www.stebro.net) "euro resonator" rather than a straight test pipe. The slight expansion chamber adds a deeper growl, while a straight test pipe can be more harsh.

    That being said, if you go with a high performance cat like the HyperFlow from FChat sponsors Ricambi America or Nick's Forza, you'll have the best of all worlds.

    I just completed a Hyperflow and Tubi set up on an otherwise stock 78 308 gtb sounds great and has added noticable performance.The work was done at IFS in Easton Mass give John a call for an opinion on your setup.

    If temp reduction in the engine bay and fire safety concerns are the primary objective, how would the Hyper-Flow help? Not being sarcastic at all here. I'm curious. I thought that all cat's had to run at a crazy high temp?

    Do you guys remember a guy who post a thread about using a coffee can for tailpipes and he swears by it so much that he said it increases HP, anyway I just thought I mention it since we are talking about tailpipe.

    The old style ceramic cats have less flow and run hotter than the newer high-performance metal matrix types (Random Technologies makes the metal matrix cores for the HyperFlow). But you are correct about temperature: the catalytic process doesn’t begin until temperatures inside a converter reach 500 to 600 degrees (F). If air/fuel ratio is on target, and the exhaust is free of contaminants, internal converter temperature stays at about 1200 degrees. But keep in mind that if the converter is well-designed, the outer surface isn't anywhere near that.

    Can we get back to the cheap part of the question. Has anyone fabricated (or had fabricated) test pipes and how well did they work. I am sure the $300 to $700 test pipes work well, but this is pretty expensive pipe per linear foot, even if it does include the flanges. I have good cats now so I am not interested in new ones. Gasoline burns at way less than 500 degrees F. New cats can cause fires as well as my old ones.

    I agree with you and I am in the same boat. But, I found the Stebro suggestion at $300 (which is for a pair) not too outrageous given the situation. It's a 28 year old car and somewhat special. I'm thinking this is the direction I'm going.

    Will be curious what you decide and how it works out.

    So far I am leaning toward the Stebro as well but want to know if there are other options.

    Well, your question wasn't the cheapest, but "what is the best testpipe out there for the money?" -- I'd still have to say Stebro euro-resonator/pipe on a VALUE basis. The sound is definitely better/deeper than that of a simple straight pipe.
