You gotta give some guys "A" for trying (glutton for punishment also comes to mind...), but since Fred is SOOO concerned about people being "misled", I just cant let this one go as I dont want you guys to be....misled.

FACT: the indentation in the roof of the LP400 Countach IS NOT for the rear view mirror!!! (as stated by Fred above)
So technically, Fred is misleading you. Hey Fred, what goes around comes around..... ;-)

The indentation on the LP400 roof is a purely symbolic design feature carried over from the original LP500 prototype, perhaps to pay homage to the concept of that first car. The original LP500 was supposed to use a genuine double-mirror periscope system for rear view, but as is often the case it was abandoned in favor of a simple rear-view mirror attached to the windscreen for the production car. The rear view mirror of an LP400 views directly through the flat window that seperates cabin from engine cover. You can see this clearly in the rear shot of the red car below.
Other than looking damned cool and acting as a nice little skylight, the feature is useless in a production LP400.
The LP400 gained its "Periscopa" nickname from the mecahnics at the 'works' who ascribed it that moniker in deference to its roof feature. So, Periscopa is an unofficial name for the car used most often by insiders or enthusiasts.

Ive been saying for some time on this site that when it comes to Miuras and Countachs, certain people make declarations and proclamations without knowing what they are talking about.....
Unless you actually OWN and LIVE with an LP400, it is easy to make the mistake Fred made. Still, I give him "A" for trying.

The images posted below are to illustrate the points Ive made above. Excuse the re-posts.

Current custodian of the Shah's former LP400 (which he GAVE to his son for passing his exams!) states that the car is alive and reasonably well in Iran, as reported to the Lamborghiniregistry.
It is finished in "Rosso Granada". His Royal Highness Loved lambos...

Joe, is the car located in the museum outside Teheran that hosts the Shah-collection, among them the fabeled Ferrari Superfast and the incredible Mercedes 500K "Autobahnkurier"?

Famed racecars such as Maserati's Birdcage and Ferrari's 250LM used tubular space frame chassis to great effect. So did Porsche's all-conquering 917K.

Stanzani decided that chassis-flex experienced in the Miura was to be a thing of the past and he commissioned Marchesi to build a rigid tubular space-frame chassis for the Countach at his shop down the street from Sant Agata.

The result was an engineering work of art, and Machesi went on to make all the Countach chassis (LP400 to Annivesario), weighing in at just 90kg/198 lbs.

The last illustration of a Countach with front and rear damage when journalists "offed" it at speed in 1975, shows the chassis' strength. Damaged heavily front & rear, the doors still operate.

And this chassis was the reason why the Countach is such a better car to drive than the fabeled Miura!

Is it true that Mr. Wallace loaded the front of the crash test car with radiator cores for better deformation results?
