WILMINGTON, N.C. - A teenager accused of robbing a student of two new Playstation 3s on the day the popular game consoles were introduced was shot to death by police sent to arrest him.

Peyton Strickland, 18, was killed Friday at a house he shared with three roommates, New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey said.

"If this boy would've come to the door, opened the door, we probably wouldn't be talking," the sheriff said Sunday.

Roommate Mike Rhoton said Strickland was unarmed, but may have been holding a video game controller when he went to the door as it was bashed in by officers.

Authorities promised Monday to fully investigate the fatal shooting. "No one is above the law and no one is beneath its protection," District Attorney Ben David said. He declined to discuss details of the case.

The State Bureau of Investigation is examining the case and three deputies on the team were placed on paid leave, normal practice whenever officers fire their weapons, Causey said.

Arrest warrants alleged that Strickland, a student at Cape Fear Community College, and a University of North Carolina-Wilmington student stole two PlayStation units from another UNC-Wilmington student that day.

The sheriff said the robbery victim had waited three days in line to buy two Playstation 3 units for $641 each at a Wal-Mart. He was unloading the units at his campus apartment when one man beat him to the ground while another took the PlayStations, Causey said.

The sheriff said Strickland was shot by members of a a special police unit who went to help university officers serve warrants. He would not say why the special team was assisting.

Strickland's dog, a German shepherd, also was shot to death.

The second man named in the warrants was arrested at another address and was released on bail on Saturday, authorities said.

The nationwide introduction of the Sony game system on Nov. 17 was marked by rowdy crowds and store stampedes. One buyer waiting in line at a Connecticut store was shot by armed robbers.

    1. Don't steal a PS3.
    2. Don't hold an object if police come to your door.
    3. Karma comes back in terrifying ways.

I'd like to add a fourth one:

    4. Don't bring expensive electronics (or any expensive items) into college dorms/appartments, because it is guaranteed to get stolen.

ALLEGED thief... all it proves is that they capped some kid who was playing Playstation. They have yet to prove it was a) a stolen playstation and b) the guy who was robbed's playstation.

I don't condone the thievery and think he should have been punished for say, larceny over $250, but justice is unserved when a young man dies over something stupid like this. A couple months of probation and restitution, not a life. Considering the situation with police over the other shooting last week (the bridegroom in NYC), it is certainly ill-timed.

No one should be beaten over a video game; and certainly, no one should
die over one. Poor judgement on the alleged thief's part and possibly the
    officers involved.

Right. So when someone doesn't open the door straight away, you barge in and shoot them.

Endoubtedly the cops had enough evidence to arrest the perps because a judge signed off on an arrest warrant. When they knocked on the door, no answer, so after a few requests to open they knock it down. They see the perp with something in his hand. They don't heave the time to get into a detailed analysis over what is in his hand. The perp had an arrest warranted issued for commiting a violent crime on another, he could be using violence against the cops now. The solution is really really simple: HE SHOULDN'T HAVE STOLEN AND USED VIOLENCE AGAINST ANOTHER.

It amazes me that at this type of forum (more upperclass) the suspicion falls first on the cops. Do you actually call the cops if someone steals from your business, home, car, etc.? It would seem hypocritical if you do.

Yes, when someone doesn't answer the door in a timely manner when the police are there to arrest them, they barge right in there to arrest that someone who has had an arrest warrant issued agaimst them.

Is it just me or are cops not trained in shooting someone in a nonlethal but very painful area (which I believe any part of your body being shot will put you in severe pain).

THIS IS NOT ABOUT WHAT CLASS YOU ARE IN. THE LAW SHOULD BE THE
SAME FOR ALL. AND LEARN TO READ BEFORE YOU POST. I SAID THAT NO
ONE SHOULD BE BEATEN OVER A VIDEO GAME (REFERRING TO THE VICTIM).
I THEN SAID THAT THE OFFICERS POSSIBLY USED BAD JUDGEMENT. DIDN'T
BLAME THEM OR THE DEAD PERP AS YOU CALL HIM.

I HAVE A VERY GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT IN MY AREA
AND WOULD NOT HESITATE TO CALL THEM TO MY BUSINESS OR HOME. I
WAS ONLY MAKING A STATEMENT THAT IT IS SAD THAT ANYONE WOULD
BE BEATEN OR KILLED OVER A VIDEO GAME.

training centers around shots to center of mass. Biggest possible target, most likely area to score a hit.

you NEVER shoot to wound or scare or wing or cause pain. You shoot to hit your target and eliminate the threat the target poses.

I did, you said in essence, neither deserved what happened to them (I agree), but your last statement 'and possibly the
officers involved.' (to me) implies fault to the cops.

As you, I also believe in one law for all, regardless of class. I had brainlock and that was what I came up with.

WHAT REALLY SCARES ME IS THE THOUGHT OF THEM BREAKING IN AND
FIRING. I LIVE IN A CONDO AND OFTEN PUT ON HEADPHONES WHEN
GAMING OR LISTENING TO MUSIC SO AS NOT TO DISTURB ANYONE IN
SURROUNDING UNITS. SO IF THEY KNOCK AND I DON'T HEAR THEM,
DOES THAT GIVE THEM THE RIGHT TO SHOOT ME IN THE MIDDLE OF
    GT4?

    BUT, SINCE I DON'T HAVE A RECORD, I GUESS I'M SAFE.

The cops did not just break in and shoot. They broke in, thought he had a gun, and shot. Big difference. It's a tragic accident, but the cops were not at fault.
No, they're not, because that's exceedingly difficult, and when you end up in a situation where the police are shooting you, they're not concerned with your safety. They're concerned about theirs. And attempting to shoot you in the leg or something puts their lives at even more risk.

I, too, am amazed that people are blaming the cops. Imagine you're in their position: you knock on the door, no one comes, so you knock it down, and there's a guy standing there with a black object in his hand. If you hesitate to figure out exactly what it is, and it's a real gun, you're dead.
