Attached is a file summarising the responses from the Fchat community, to date, to the survey of Owners of Used Ferraris.

If I knew how to display it I would!

The survey is here for anybody who wishes to complete it:

    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=658092990515

Thank you again to the 170 odd people who have responded from here. There are a further 100 responses from other sources that I have not had time to aggregate and analyse.

Interesting that 60% of those surveyed did NOT get an independent PPI

Interesting. Not many of us own 2000 or newer model year cars, per these results.

Regarding the PPI, you'll notice half of us bought our cars from dealers - so the PPI figure isn't too shocking.

And the vast majority that did get a PPI had it turn up nothing or just minor issues. A good question might have been, "Did the results of the PPI enable you to negotiate a lower price that covered the price of the PPI or more?"

I could look at the relationship between %ge of asking price and whether or not a survey was done if you like. One would presumably expect that there was a significant difference where a negative report was recorded.

As I said somewhere else, I'm not examining price so much as inferences about quality and risk (albeit that they are correlated to price presumably).

I think it's more about odds, most times you get a PPI it won't turn up anything major, but the one time it does, it makes it more than worthwhile.

Also, the PPI question only addressed those that bought the cars, what about the ones that didn't buy a car because the PPI turned up major issues?

    Good survey though, very informative

    Fascinating....

    1) 50% of folks didn't do a PPI (and that is from a highly informed selected group on here!). My dealer must have been right when he said HARDLY ANYONE requests a PPI.

    2) 80% of ferrari's sold within 2 months?

    3) 80% of ferrari's sold for within 10% of asking price?

    Fascinating...

I am one of those that bought from a private party and did no inspection prior to purchase. The seller had to insist that I test drive the car before selling it to me. It would have had to been a really terrible test drive for me to decide against the purchase. I guess my ADHD from childhood was creeping back in...
It's all good, the car came with full service history and had been taken care of by one of the most well respected mechanics around.
    Sometimes you get lucky!

Anybody know how to show graphs as pictures on here rather than word attachments?

The attached compares the distribution of %ge of asking price paid depending on whether or not a report was done.

There is some visual evidence that those who had a report done, on average paid less.

At some point I'll do the analysis rigorously

Neat info. I'd recommend combining some of the charts together (in columnar form) for better information e.g. stated condition vs. actual condition. Also keep like information together e.g. all warranty pie charts.

Do a screen capture from Word (use the Fn + PrtSc key) and paste the contents into any graphics software - Photoshop is what I use, but probably the basic Windows graphics display program would work. Save it as a jpg or gif and then you can attach it here.

I'm not a PPI endorser in most instances for old Ferraris if I could test drive the car personally. They all need work, so it really comes down to the major issues like engine and rust, clutch, bushings, water pump... Unless someone is totally clueless about cars, one should be able to recognize major issues with a little investigation and an hour or less of a test drive. Obviously complete records is a big deal too; if the car has none it better be cheaper to begin with or I wouldn't even consider it.

Cars being bought sight unseen, and the rare classics obviously need a third party evaluation. But if I was buying say a 308 that I could see in person, I wouldn't get a ppi. I might have to look at 10 cars before finding one that seemed good and at $250-500 a pop for a PPI, that's getting into serious money. Only if I found an otherwise great car that had one specific issue I was concerned about would I get a ppi. It seems according to the survey, most people take the same approach.

Looking at the data by model and age of vehicle it seems that it doesn't make any difference whether the car's a Daytona or a 360: Approximately 60-65% don't bother with an independent report across all ages and all model types.

It may be simply a function of an individual's risk preference.
