As all the readings are of the same magnitude, one can deduce the following:

    1.) It is original paint

2.) It is a very good repaint from a sripped down body.

Given the year of car, i would imagine #1 is more correct.

Paint readings are relevant if you find a panel or two that is different from the rest, this would indicate a repaint.

But more importantly-how does the car look/ Remember that alot of import cars coming off the docks have paint body damage. Something on the order of 15-20% of all new cars have had a paint touch up upon arriving to the dealer.

Ferrari, Lambos, Jaguars, and most german cars see this issue.

i used to paint for gm. the readings are what you'd expected from a factory paint job. a repaint would be much thicker in some places.

The orginal post says " Looking at an '02 E55 and here are the paint meter readings as per sales manager..".
I am assuming it is a 2002 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG.

Those paint meter readings are all factory spec. 4.5 - 5.5 mils on an Elco Meter or paint meter are factory spec.

If the entire car was 4.5 - 5.5 and the hood was 7.5 with variation then the hood has been re-sprayed.

If your meter reads -- this means no metal = Bondo or other body filler or aluminum/glass hood.

    Mario

P.S. not a ferrari question..should be moved by a Mod.
