Jim - I thought that it was limited to vintage race cars, but your "rent a car" remark makes me wonder if that is true. Just what cars are eligible? Thanks
I have a source that will rent vintage/eligible cars as well as provide full support at a rate that's not too bad. Best
Jim I tell ya.... I gotta give this one some serious consideration. I would LOVE to do it, sounds like a trip of a lifetime! Taking the Daytona would be fun, but my '69 911S would actually be perfect for this event. Think the organizers would entry such a car? Terry
This was one of this year's entries: a similar Porsche. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I was more succesful ;-) http://www.targaflorio.info/ not the official website, here is the good one : http://www.targa-florio.it/
Hi A 365 would be fine as would a 911 or a Daytona. If you want futher information pm me your contact information, the car you want to bring and I'll put you in touch. This is a very friendly event but you have to get started soon to secure shipping/insurance/etc. Best
Napolis asked me to post up about our experience last year, as I rented vintage and we were in it. I cannot really express adequately what a wonderful experience we had. I can say that if you have even the slightest thought that you'd like to do something like this then you really owe it to yourself to make it happen. As to some of the questions above - generally sports and sporting cars that would have been eligible in period are eligible to run. 1973 is about the cutoff and they started the event in 1906 so I would think most of you wouldn't have to worry about having too old of a car. For those who don't own a car of the proper vintage, I have a source in Milano with a stable of vintage cars available for hire - in addition he can provide delivery in Palermo and support as well. That is what we did and it is a great way to go. We had holiday time before and after the Targa so it was wonderful to turn up in Palermo and have everything really sorted for us ahead of time. His website is www.classiccarcharter.com - look under 'Noleggio.' (Jim do you have another guy or is your post above referring to my man?) Cost of course is relative, but doing it the way we did is a 5-figure euro sum with travel, entrance fee, and car hire/transport/support (this ain't Hertz or Avis folks - think high 4 figures just for this if you do vintage) but having canvassed a bunch of options the fun-per-dollar ratio cannot be beat. This is great stuff but if you're gonna be in it, get started now - I was basically set with everything before the end of the year last year for an event the first week of June. Also for those of you who enjoy a nice drive in the country with your SO this is a perfect event - navigation is by road book so not difficult. My wife doesn't do maps to save her life but with the road book she had an absolute blast. Social aspects are outstanding - great people in the event and throughout Sicily and of course they feed us like royalty.... Enough words - have a look.... Kevin/Jim, how serious is the racing/rallying part? Historically, this has been a balls out race, yes? Has the current version been detuned to be more like the Colorado Grand? Thx, Dale
Dunno about the Colorado Grand but the driving is really limited to not getting lost so that you miss a meal. There were "special stages" but these were super-low speed timed bits where you tripped a series of timers laid out in a parking lot. So in terms of "racing" ain't really like that but by the same token you gotta pay attention or you can get lost and Sicilian villages aren't exactly laid out in a N-S-E-W grid.... Cheers Kev
Jim, Any idea how far in advance the car would have to leave the States to arrive in time? Are there services in Italy to handle the arrival and departure of a car?
Hello Jim, It was great fun, but to really enjoy it for me was to go flat out on the Targa, the hill climb to the Etna and above all the opportunity we’ve got to get some rubber on the fast Syracuse circuit, which was perfect. Also don’t forget if you didn’t keep your speed you weren’t classified. Only 10 out of some 45 did. But I agree with you that if you compare it to for instance with the MM it’s really relaxed driving. Regards Jan Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I would ask a shipper. Martin Button at Cordsil can help and yes there are people to help at the other end. Jan Hope all's well and I see you soon! Best
Do you think the 365 GT4 BB is eligible ? Or just the Daytona ? Btw, there is the Ferrari event on the 20th at MAranello and then the 60th anniversary the 23/24th of June !! What a month !!
I'm guessing the event referred to on the 20th (May) is the RM auction. http://www.rmauctions.com/Default.cfm?SaleCode=FF07
