Cosworth and F1

Yes, Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin did a superb job in building the first marketable F1 engine. 3.0 DFV (Double-Four Valve) was first developed in the late 50's and continued evolving up into the early '90s. Winning championships with Lotus in the 60's and finishing with Benetton in the '90's.

Although Ford bought the company, it has been sold again to Gerry Forsythe and Kevin Kalkhoven, the VP's of ChampCar.

I believe their main operations are still in England.

 

Hmmm ... first race was in '68 I believe, and it was developed in a very short time, thus surely it was developed in the late 60's.

None-the-less an engine that completely changed the thinking of combustion chamber shape, and that concept has been used ever since.

Indeed, another great name leaves F1. Can only hope it’s not a permanent exit. As mentioned, their work, both in and out of F1, is legendary.

 

I named my dog Cossie (girl) in honor to them, lol. They are a great engine builder and I hope they can make it back to F1.

I'm presuming Cosworth is second with race wins, any know how many compared to Ferrari?

 

I believe the DFV made its debut in 1967, responding to the (then) new 3 litre formula introduced in 1966. IIRC, Lotus had exclusive that first year, with other teams getting DFVs in '68 (or was it 69?). THe rest, as they say, is history.

The number of WCC should be related to the number of cars that started with a Cosworth engine IMHO. If you have a field of cars with say 15-20 Cosworth engined cars and only two Ferraris the odds are obviously against Ferrari. That said it's not taking away from the achievements of Cosworth, especially since they were succesful for such a long time.
