I got an email yesterday from a fellow f-chatter asking how much I have spent on my 86 TR (60k+ miles). Since I inherited it from my father who passed away earlier this year I had to go back to find the invoices. By the time I added them all up the total spent on this 1986 TR tops $110,000 over the past two years (including purchase price of $50k).

Now before you call me crazy (I can already see the replies telling me what other f-cars I could have bought with $110k) understand that I committed to this TR for sentimental reasons, not financial payback. Dad loved this car so much, yet had it for such a short time (it was in the shop a lot the 1st year) I felt compelled to 'keep it in the family'. I have put in around $45k (30k service, 512M tranny/differential, clutch, X-OST/HyperFlow cats). Also, dad bought the 86 TR without the benefit of the wealth of information available here on f-chat (I don't believe he even had a PPI). Given the condition of the TR and the amount of restoration he had done (interior, dent/paint touchup, cables, etc), and the info I have gleaned from this site, I believe he overpaid on the purchase price.

So, back to the thread title... while technically this TR has cost over $110k recently, I wonder what it is really worth these days. (No, I am not planning on selling, just curious). I know it has a lot of miles, but the compression is good on all cylinders and I think I have done just about everything that can be done to bring this up to A+ condition.

Rob, I was having a similar conversation with a friend of mine about my 85. I have not spent nearly as much as you on my car , however I can certainly see spending close to that in the near future as I am going to upgrade the rear before it breaks as well as put in an exhaust etc. I personally feel that even withh 100k in my hand I still would have bought the TR and put the rest of the money in the bank for the rainy days. Everything is not just about monetary value, as you have implied and frankly in my eyes the car is worth a 100k + to me. I am sure going forward (many years ) the car will definitely rise past that mark and justify your expenditures. Frankly, I still don't get the statements made by some about maintenance costs bringing down the value of the car. Frankly every Ferrari is expensive to maintain. Enjoy your car, you have done the right thing.

I would have done the same thing. It was my dad's car; damn the costs. What price can u put on cruising around with the memories and ur dad's spirit in the passenger's seat? Sometimes it's not about the money. We have always said owning and driving a Ferrari is about the total experience. Yours comes along with a nice bonus.

What he said. I've only had my 328 a year, and with sales tax, a major service, replacing old hoses and fuel lines, fluid changes, a front bumper respray and some minor bits, I'd be behind already if I sold it at retail. But, so what. It's not an investment or a business. The smile factor is probably adding a few years to my life (so figure another 9,000 posts here).

Knowing the work that was done to yours, I think it's worth more than the $55K Judge mentioned. It's an essential and expensive upgrade to the car.

If I were going to buy a TR, I'd buy yours over many others.

Whatever it would bring you is way less than $110k. Keep it and enjoy it-- to you, hopefully it's worth $110k, even if it isn't to any other buyer.

my 86 tr has 56,000kms now on the clock.8th yr of ownership, just hit 100k total everything incuded.
In Canada, nothing in this price range for that money that could compare over the last 8yrs.
The look on everyone's face when they see a TR .......priceless.
Hope my Son keeps it after im gone....im leaving a piggy bank with some coins in it for him to lessen the blow.
Good for you !!! You're Father must be proud of you looking down...Enjoy it in good health for many years to come.
I think if you sell it, you should ask 200K for it.

i agree w/ jon and vince. for the memories...what it meant to your dad and in turn what it will mean to you and perhaps your son...$110k may be a bargain or even worth it at twice the price.

Priceless. Anyone with money can buy a new Ferrari. What you simply can't buy is a personal history. Yours is touching and, though perhaps not quantifiable, is valuable nonetheless.

Enjoy your -- for it's yours now (even if it will always be dad's) -- TR.

Thought I would share a couple of quotes from dad's diary ...

When he first took delivery ...

"Took the Ferrari out today. This car may be too much for me!"

    ... then a month later...

"I think a have got the hang of this. Car is SMOOTH at 130 mph! "

Now that I reflect on this, I realize that there was an 84 year old going 130 mph on public roads. How scary is THAT! But then dad was a spry 84, even shooting his age on the golf course.

    Testarob,

It's just money (to a certain extent). Your happiness counts - that's what matters. You have a well-sorted car now. Enjoy it!

Every Fcar owner will go through some kind of costly problem(s) esp. if they owned the car long enough. I have owned my 328 for 4 years now. This year it had a major service, clutch replacement, aircon, handbrake, etc. Cost was 5 figures. No regrets though. My car is "correct." I am happy.

Your dad really sounded like a neat guy. That just adds another dimension to the legacy- Definitely priceless. I hope my son would take care of my car the way you are. Not to sound too strange, but I do think about what happens to my car if I pass on.

    Testarob,

considering what you spent and the sentamental value, the resale value may be irrelevant but, I would try to get the highest possible agreed value you can get when insuring it.

Show the insurance apraiser the original bill of sale and all of the reciepts for upgrade work, maybe you can get $85 - $90k from a friendly insurance guy.

    Regards,

    Art S.
