I have also noticed this. For example, the commentators always seem to say "This team has really been playing physical.," while they should be saying "physically." Also, I HATE when people say "Don't take it personal.," when they should be saying "personally." It's one of my biggest pet peaves- right up there with people that say "Mondee" and Tuesdee," etc.

 

A segue is a transition.

I was stretching it a bit but ironically John's rant about grammatical accuracy contained an error. NNO caught this, I was just playing along.

The title of this thread lacks a verb.

 

My favorite comment on the Segway. (I don't remember who said it.) "The last thing this country needs is a device that causes people to get even less exercise".

Grammar has gone downhill. Just read some of the Ferrarichat posts if you don't think so.

 

I agree. On the other hand, I've found that in writing nearly 9,000 little messages and stories, my ability to craft a direct and correct sentence has significantly improved.

Going to law school helped too!

Grammatically, I don't see a problem with either. The only issue could be as to whether they are used for the correct meaning. The first simply says that the subject matter holds some level of interest above the minimal level, whereas the second says that the subject matter holds the no more than the minimal level of interest. However, I am sure that people tend to get the two mixed up on a regular basis.

 

A phrase I'm seeing Americans write and say all the time is "most everything".

It doesn't make any sense. Actually I started a thread about it here a while back...

Most - a large portion of something, but not all. Technically implies greater than 50% or majority.

Everything - 100% of something. Whole. All.

Therefore saying most everything doesn't make sense.

It's like saying most dead.

Or slightly unique.

 

One that bothers the c*@p out of me is "centered around". Think about it...

 

Short for "almost everything". Americans are lazy with the language.

It's not like they invented it.

This isn't new. Back in the '70s I saw a headline in a major Phila paper:
"ESCAPERS RECAPTURED"

How dare they? That would really confuse your parrot when you put that in the bottom of his cage.

 

I hate it when people write "should of" instead of should have.

I hate it when people write this is "real" good, or "real" fast. What does fake good feel like or fake fast mean?

Homonyms in general are getting abused left and write these days.
