Here's the deal: I have two free R/T airfares to anywhere Southwest flies, but I have no vacation time at work built up (new job - don't get any vacation for 6 months), but I need to use these vouchers in the next 5 weeks.

Where can I go (keeping in mind where Southwest flies) that I can leave on a Friday afternoon, and come back Sunday, without renting a car, that is a worthwhile 2 day trip ?

I'm looking for something other than Vegas, but it needs to be a place where a shuttle will pick us up at the airport (private or hotel shuttle), and some place where everything we would do is within walking distance of the Hotel.

Some folks are telling me Mall of America - but SWA doesn't go there, NYC is out of the question (spend more time flying/on the road than being there), I'm thinking LAX and then super-shuttling to Redondo Beach, or possibly Chicago and staying on the Mag Mile.

(Vegas might end up being the logical choice, time-wise)

    Ideas ?

    Midwest.

Skiing is out just because of the time thing, and by the looks of where SWA flies non-stop (from here), it looks like it will be Chicago, St. Louis, Phoenix or...... VEGAS. We don't want to spend 2-4 hours laying over in an airport each way.

Wherever we go, we will basically have about 48 hours to 'do stuff', and we don't want to spend it in a car, bus or taxi driving somewhere.

Fly into LAX or Orange County airports ( John Wayne) and take a shuttle to any of a cazillion hotels in or by Disneyland........or
Do the same thing for Disneyland in Orlando..........or
Fly into San Diego , stay in downtown and cab it to the S.D. Zoo,Balboa Park (great museums), Old Town, Sea World,The Midway aircraft carrier and Star of India nautical museums, San Diego Chargers game, Mariners Village............or
Fly into San Francisco or Oakland and stay in downtown San Francisco, the waterfront, ferry to Sausalito, Alcatraz, tons of great restaurants, shops.
If you go to Redondo, Manhattan,Venice beaches, Santa Monica you have many great restaurants, clubs, hotels, etc. but everything is spread out pretty much and you probably would want some rental wheels.....always lots to do in L.A. but we spend too much time on the 405......have fun!!!

I suggest Vegas... for a short trip like that, all the action is right there, you won't have to waste time traveling around when you get there, you won't need a car (taxi to your hotel and that's about it) and with that short of a time frame, you'd never see the same thing twice unless you really wanted to :)

have fun with your trip... any chance you could do in over a holiday weekend and get an extra day of vacation for it?

Fly in to Fort Lauderdale and take the Tri-rail to Miami. Go to coconut Grove, take taxi to the beach, or ride Tri rail up to West Palm and hang out at City Place. Just a thought. Personally, I'd go to Vegas.

My first choice would be New Orleans. Cafe DuMonde (sp?) The Gumbo Shop, Inn of the Two Sisters, Acme Fish ( oysters), Central Grocery (muffaletta's), Antoine's and so many more. Great town to walk around in. Try the aquarium, where you walk through a tunnel of fish. The WWII museum is outstanding. And for the finale, Sunday Brunch at Commander's Palace.

2nd choice is fly to Albuquerque, and go 50 miles to Santa Fe. Another town that is different from most anywhere you have been in the US. Great restaurants, art, and music, and the town smells of burning Pinion in the chimaneas. Skiing is just minutes outside of town, and 30 minute away is Los Alamos with some great museums about the scientists that developed the atom bomb there.

These are 2 of my favorite towns anywhere.

Here are some week-end trips ive done. Have fun! I dont know where Southwest flies, but..

New Orleans. Hell, one time on my layover to Cancun, I took a cab to the French Quarter for some coffee and beingets (sp.?) at Cafe DuMonde.
    Smithsonian Institute
    Washington D.C.
Miami. (Go get a ride in the Slutmobile.)
    Manhattan.
New York (Go get a ride in the P4/5.)
    DisneyWorld
    Mt. Rushmore
    Chicago- Rush St.(sp.?)
    Philadelphia- Liberty Bell etc.
    Greenbay Packers game
    Vail
    Atlanta for a Dodgers game
Boston- Went for the world series, and they never made it to game 6. Ended up driving up to Maine for a Halloween party.

New Orleans would be my top choice.

Can't go wrong with Chicago of course :). If you decide to come here PM me and we'll exchange cell #s. Otherwise, I agree that New Orleans would be great too. A place you must visit at least once in your lifetime.

    Nebraska (I'm in). Southwest Airlines.

St. Louis - not the first choice, unless it was summer and we could hit a jazz/blues festival.
Phoenix - nobody has said a thing about it.
Chicago - been there several times, probably #2 choice.
Vegas - has to be #1 just because of the location and time deal.

What about LA/LA area? The flights out there are pretty cheap, and it is exotic car central. Not to mention you can escape the midwest weather.

Cheap flights make no difference when I have two free flight vouchers.....
Again, it comes back to time: time in the air, and time driving. If I had my druthers, I'd fly in to Key West and just drink Rum all weekend, but I have 4 options, and Vegas is winning.
    But don't worry - I don't gamble, I won't lose more than the $20 I allocate for it, I'm pretty stingy.

Lots of great suggestions have been listed (Chicago, New Orleans, Florida, etc), but it seems like you are rushing to take a trip just because the ticket is expiring.

Did you know that for $50 per ticktet (roundtrip) they will extend it by a year? That way you could wait until you earn more vacation. Here is a link, check the second FAQ. http://www.southwest.com/rapid_rewards/rr_program_faq.html
