Went to look at 348 today very nice car(possible purchase)……. but the drivers door didn’t sit flush is this known problem or does this suggest accident damage? Passenger door was perfect.

definite red flag - could be something dumb but would need an expert body guy to verify. I found maybe 1/2 the 348's I looked at had "stories" of accidents. Most Ferrari buyers drive these cars hard, and lots see track miles where accidents can happen more often. Even the perfectly repaired cars traded at a steep discount.

I've had my car since new....16 years now and the doors sometimes sit flush, and sometimes they don't........and I've never had an accident. Its just part of the hand made thing.

There was a tech campaign on the 348 door striker with a new reinforced one. All cars after 3351 had the new striker.

Mine 1990 has the old ones and although the doors sit flush, I really need to close them with serious conviction.

My 328 was just the same, but i had to adjust the drivers side often to make the door sit flush.

That striker must make all of the difference in the world because my doors close with 1 finger. Bet that's a cheap fix, too.

Thanks for all the replies….I didn’t take any pics but the owner has agreed for me to carry out PPI…..should the inspector pick up any accident damage and repair?
Also when the car was started there was quite bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust for a good 5-10 mins….is this normal? but once driven it was fine

I have also looked at another car…..but in the first few years the car was only serviced every couple of years but the mileage was very low between intervals maybe couple of thousand miles or so(could explain previous owner servicing every two years) but the current owner from 2000 has serviced it every year. Should I be worried about this…..do your 348’s have annual servicing records from new?

By the way merry Christmas to you all!!

The inspector is not responsible for damage unless he does it by driving the car to road test it.

The smoke from the exhaust might be water vapor. This goes away after everything is warmed up so, if the smoke doesn't smell like burning oil (blue smoke) then I would think it is water vapor and is normal.

On the service, what type of service? If you are talking about motor oil, gear box oil, radiator fluid, brake fluid change and some adjustments, then it is normal. If the service was more involved, then may be not normal. Depends on what was done. I would check the records. Also, when was the last major (timing belts, etc..)service performed? This could run you 5-8K depending on where you get it done.

Hope you get a good one. I am very happy with mine and I see it as one of the best purchases I could have made.
