My original post was: I get a bunch of people who tell me that a Ferrari is not for me. I defend myself, and you think I am the troll? Maybe this forum is not for me. I wanted to learn about Ferrari's and I got a bunch of people looking down at me.
Probably not trolling. Probably just a bit confused. It's does sound like he hasn't spent much time surfing/lurking the board .... or he'd realize he comes across like the many trolls we've seen here (specially corvette & porsche lovers). Until the op (ZR1) learns that Ferrari's are purchased for "passion's" sake and not for much of anything else he'll remain confused. BTW, I love ALL fast cars and can afford just about any I choose (not bragging, just an *FYI*) but I chose an F430. Why (this might help ZR1): Primarily because I can afford the onerous purchase & maintenance costs(specially if you live were I live). But essentially because it's the only ,off the showroom floor, car that does what I want it to do (w/some reservations, of course) at a reasonable price. Finally <phew>: I get tired of cars quickly. So to continue the *FYI* .... i'll probably sell the F430 during the 08 model year and buy something else. From what i've heard .... it won't be another Ferrari. Specifically for ZR1: Wait for the 08 model year announcements. You may find that a Ferrari's not for you. Meanwhile you can have a blast driving corvettes, etc. And do yourself a favor .... drive a new porsche (or come to one of our track days and take a ride in one). Welcome to the board and above all .... have fun. At the end of the day .... "...they're just cars." <quote; napolis> ;-) HTH, Richard.
I am not interested in a NSX. The three cars I have on my radar are all Ferrari's, the 308, 348 and Testarossa.
Richard, did you hear something that is happening with Ferrari for '08 that makes you not want a Ferrari? I have heard in '10, they are switching to V10 engines in the F430 successor.... What's going on for '08?
ZR1, after a Ferrari, you probably will not want any other sportscar....except for maybe a Lambo. Go for it.
Relax ZR1. If anyone's *truly* "looking down" on you they're not worth your time. Heck, put them on your ignore list. Unfortunately I mthink you might have a bit of a chip on your shoulder due to ignorance of Fchat protocols and Ferraris in general. You would have avoided sounding ... ahem .... confused, by looking thru the board for an extended period and learning a bit about F cars and etc, prior to posting what sounded like *anothuh* "my car's better than your car" fishing expedition. As it is, most have been kind. So, take heart and bear w/our suspicions. Don't get defensive. It'll only alienate others. Back On Topic: First a Disclaimer: I know very little about cars and even less about Ferraris. Ah jist drives 'em boss. ;-) You've told us you have a small purchase budget (yes ZR1, $55K is a pittance) and a limited income to support a Ferrari with. You prefer handling but consider a car's styling very important. You don't want to be embarrassed by "lesser" cars (implied). We don't know how good you are w/auto mechanics. Nor what other resources in that re you might have available. I must assume that your resources in that re are limited or you would have mentioned them (within the proper context). So, of course .... those of us who do not want to see you dissatisfied advise you look at other marques. Some of us do so in a more diplomatic manner than others. But .... you get the point, right ZR1? We're trying to help ya bro. BTW: I too wondered if this forum was right for me when I first joined. No worries ZR1 .... this forum's for everyone. Just be cool and you'll do just fine here. Richard.
Every previous exposure I have had to Ferrari is the oppsoite of what I am learning here on this forum. My first exposure to Ferrari was the television show Magnum, PI. I remember an episode where Magnum wants to get information from a Navy lieutenant who drives a late 70's Corvette. The lieutenant doesn't want to talk, he hops in his Corvette, hits the highway, floors it, and smiles as he thinks he has lost Magnum. The camera shifts to the Corvette speedometer, as it climbs from 30mph to 80+ mph effortlessly. The next shot is Magnum in his 308, he drops down a gear, hits the gas, and speeds right past the Corvette. Magnum waves as he passes, and points to an exit ramp. Not to mention that Magnum was very much a care free kind of guy. He enjoyed driving the Ferrari. I don't believe Magnum drove the Ferrari because of the name, I believe he drove it because of the performance. And because it is fun! I'll admit that popular television from the 70's and 80's is what influences my tastes. I love the 70's 6.6L Firebirds. I love Corvettes. And I like Ferrari too. For whatever reason, I do not like Porsche, Honda, VW, and Toyota. I like BMW's and Audi but I don't like Mercedes. Those are my subjective tastes.
Hi Ed. Nothing but speculation. But some of it's well founded methinks. ;-) There's a thread in the 360/430 forum about the issues. We should meet there so as not to jack this thread. It's called "F430 successor, F540 out in '10!" Richard.
ZR1, i come from a long, LONG line of vettes, Z28s and Trans ams. some of the newer LS1 / LT-1, but most of my stuff was pre 1973 old school. yes, most any modern LT1 / LS1 will slaughter any of the sub 100k Ferraris. without boring everyone to death, its not about "speed". i had an average of 5-8 cars at a time, all registered, all insured. i got bored with 455 4 speeds and 70 Z28s after having so many , for so long. i had some of the newer stuff too. i dont like computers or fuel injection. i work on super smart airplanes all day. i dont want to see any computers in my cars. i went after the old , slow ferraris ( i have had 4 ferraris in the last 2 years ) and Lamborghinis ( 2 in the last 2 years). because i could afford them, i wanted them, and i could care less what other people have, fast or slow. if i wanted to go fast, i would buy a nice sportbike. if you want a really cool experience, try and old slow ferrari 308, dino 308GT4 a Lambo Jalpa, Urraco etc. going over 100 mph on public roads in most states is not joke anymore. i have no use for a ram air trans am that does 170+ mph. for the same or less money i would rather buy a ferrari, keep it a year or 2 and sell it and make a few bucks or break even. you can drive these cars FOR FREE if you know how to work on them. they are easy to work on. modded muscle cars ALWAYS go down in value, with no return on your time, tools and cash. the european classic are going up in value, and are totally fun to drive. try a few cars out, you may like to tinker with them. i have run across the killer Civics and Supras, and most of the time the guys and gals are just happy to "see" and hear and old ferrari. i admit up front its old and slow, and most of the times , the guys in the other lanes are really cool gearheads too. again, its not about "speed". happy hunting, and welcome.
look at the power to weight of the 1974 to 1981 vettes, stock. some only had 150 hp. yes a 308 will kill one of those, but how many of those do you see that are not modded now? every car has a personality. an old multicarb ferrari or lambo is a real treat to drive. just like a solid cam 3:73 LT-1 1970 Z28 is different from a LS1 1998 6 speed trans am. both are fast, and very fun, the newer car does more, better , faster , and safer. but that doent mean you cant have more " fun" in the 30 year old 1970 Z28. the key to a fun muscle car is the holy grail, " 0-100-0 " . the euro cars dont like this range, and cannot be driven this way. i can take the 308GTB in the interstate and have a blast, with folks passing me at 80-90 mph. these old cars will be gone one day. gasoline aint free. emissions laws are going to get worse. have what you want now, while you can. i am shooting for a carb Countach, my first V12.... in 2007.
Thanks thecarreaper. We come from a similar background. I'm probably at the same place you were when you first decided you wanted to buy a Ferrari. I am in the information collection stage. I am trying to figure out exactly what a Ferrari can do, what it can't do, and how expensive it is to maintain or if I can do the work myself.
thank you. just trying to help. so many folks come from the Vette / Civic / Supra worlds, and are mistreated by the "better than you" guys with the high dollar " whatever " cars. i love different things about different cars. i have had several of the 85-88 MR2s, 2 turbo Mr2s and one Supra turbo that ran, and one that did not. why, oh why would you make yourself have only one type/make of car? there are so many fun things a MR2 can do, and a 455 4 speed trans am can do. the smiles are all the same, yet the cars are different. you should hear a 77 308GTB at 7500 RPMs with the open airboxes and a good exhaust. i can only dream about the carb v12s, i have not had one , "yet". try one of each, every year or so. i do !
if ya have any questions, let me know if i can help. but i am exempt from emissions and i dont like the injected cars. it depends where YOU live and what will make YOU grin like a silly person behind the wheel as you rip her through the gears. buy what makes YOU happy. and hats off to you for looking before you leap. not all Ferrari / Lambo guys are hard cases. some of us just love " cars " . great thread by the way. Michael
My first car was a 84 Camaro that put out less than 200HP. I loved starting the car, the thunder and rumbling noise the engine put out. I loved the vibration the car made. And compared to what is out there today, that Z28 is slower than many 4 bangers on the road. But the fun factor is high! The two important things for me are 1) I like it, and 2) I know what it can and can't do. Maybe everything is subjective. I like the look of the 348. That is probably the Ferrari for me. Hopefully I can find one without having to sell one of my Corvettes. I was thinking about a Testarossa. I am going to have to do much more research. I believe you posted that you can buy a Ferrari, drive it a couple years, and sell it for a profit. If I buy a Ferrari, I am thinking it will be for life. It will be something I will want to keep in the family. I remember 10 short years ago I had a chance to buy a 78 Firebird with the 400 for only $250 bucks (it had surface rust and a torn drivers seat). Today a rusted out one goes for close to 10K. As they get in accidents, rot, rust, and less of them are around, the price will go up. As I look back at my life, I sure wish I would have made more car purchases! After I buy a Ferrari, I think my next major expense will be a new garage/workshop. My problem is I always have more projects and ideas than money! That is the reason a 10K service would hurt me, because it would force me to choose between service or a new garage. 3K would not be a big deal. If I could do the work myself, it would make the choice easier!
If you look far enough back in my posts u'll see that I too had reservations about moving from American V8 muscle to high strung Italian sports cars. I bought a pristine low mileage 77 308GTB & put 7K in it over the last year & a half, these cars are not cheap to maintain! I drive it every chance I get that doesn't involve rush hour traffic & wintery weather. I want a ZR1 & wonder why u sold yours, the ZR1 is as close as Chevy has gotten to Ferrari. Bill ps Ferrari acceleration is way more stimulating than quicker times in lessor cars The Ferrari is the ultimate car no matter what the year or model, after all: ITS A FREAKIN FERRARI!
