    Porsche adds direct injection and DSG for 2008

    STUTTGART -- Four years after the launch of the current series, Porsche's iconic 911 will be upgraded for the summer of 2008.

    The front end will get a larger air intake, and the rear lighting will be redesigned.

    Major technological innovations to the 911 will include a conversion of the six-cylinder gasoline engine to direct injection and the addition of an optional dual-clutch transmission.

    The transmission will allow shifts without interrupting driving power, even in manual mode.

    Porsche's direct-injection engine, dubbed DFI, is projected to cut fuel consumption by about 10 percent.

    The updated generation of the 911 also will come with improved performance. The Carrera S coupe, which starts at $82,600, will have at least 370 hp, up from 355 hp.

    the wifes Q7 has the direct injection and for a v6 it's got nice power and great milage for a heavy sav. i trailered the ferrari with it 3 times, trailer and mondi weigh in at over 3tons and managed an average of 20mpg at 70mph. the V8 would have been nice but i'm not paying 15k more for a v8.

    i think it's been in europe for a few yrs on the VW's and now just hitting the US after complying with emmisions.

    new rear lights and different front end? Is this for the turbo version as well? I would be shocked because the new '07 turbo just came out and as a matter of fact I loved it because you can't differentiate between the back of the '02 turbo and the '07 which would have been good for me because I've been debating getting an '02 turbo or an '04 SL55 as a second car,but I think you just made my decision for me thanks.

    See, I knew Porsche had some ulterior motives when buying more stock in Audi. Direct injection rocks and I'm told that DSG errr DFG can handle quite a bit of power.

    DSG kicks some serious @ss.........on the performance of either manuals or automatics (torque convertor technology is old school)

    Some say its like ACtive handling and ABS braking technology and its value to performance is quite dramatic.

    I've also read its easier to meet emissions standards too with this technology....as well as offering the possiblity of higher EPA fuel economy standards...

    Add those two benefits and I'd guess the engine can be tuned for more hp.

    Just passing the information on to other enthusiasts here.

    I'll withhold judgement till I drive one. If the driver (and not some computer) selects the gear, I'm still interested.

    I'm surprised Porsche stuck with the crappy Tiptronic concept so long.

    Its not about gear selection as much as controlling rpms within a given gear......you just can't do that in an automatic....yuck!
