Hey! I'm new here, just found out about the site. I'm an avid exotic car fan and will likely purchase my very first exotic car in the next few years (still unsure of which, leaning towards a Lamborghini actually, don't hate me for that lol).
My one thing is, I really prefer the newer "sleeker" models to the old ones. I've spoken to many collectors/owners and they almost seem to get offended when I mention I don't really like the older models. I understand the history and all, but the designs just aren't my style. I guess you can say I feel as if they are outdated per se. Just curious as to what you guys think. Oh yeah, I'll also be asking for advice on what my first car should be, hopefully sooner than later.

It's normal to prefer what you grew up with on your bedroom wall.

i prefer the newer cars not because of looks, but because they do everything better and are much more functional. performance wise, new > old.

Newer cars are usually larger interior-wise too. Hard to like a 3X8 when there is no way in hell you could ever hope to fit in one.

Im the same. But there are some old cars I like. No Ferraris (sorry I like a few new ones) but I love muscle cars and the Mirua. If I were to buy one and just have one it would be a new one hands down. There just so much better in almost every way.

I grew up with the Testarossa, Countach, and Diablo all over my walls.......but today I just can't overlook the 360. I think it is all around perfect inside and out. The new Lambo's look to futuristic "space ship like" for me. I still love the lines of the Testarossa but sorry to say this when I look inside them they just are really lacking in the interior........really dated. Now back to your question........do people get insulted? I don't think so......everyone has a right to there opinion.....and I don't think most of these guys here who have the older models don't have them to pass them off as new, they own them because they are a great piece of history.....these cars were ahead of there time and still look great today as they pass by......... comparing them to today's cars would be un fare(technology is so far advanced)..........compare them to the other manufactures cars of the same years and see who's comes out on top.............

do you think it is a little like being an american but having no appreciation for the history...battles won, great patriots, milestone events...that make our lives today so great?

a bit of a parallel but maybe a bit off the mark.

    best,

    Yes.

Nonetheless, what got me going were the early cars, and I love them: 250 GTO, 250LM, 330 GTO, Super America. I feel in love in 50s and 60s sports cars. The first Ferrari I drove was a Queen Mother, and I still love them to this day - but it's like driving my old 911 - it's cool, it's fun, but there's a reason improvements are call improvements.

I still go to Monterey every year, and I drool. Seeing and hearing the vintage Ferraris on the track is a beautiful thing.

I like both in different ways old/new. Older cars are more beautiful (not that the new ones look bad) but I like the research and technology put into the newer ones.

The only time I get "offended" (and even then I don't really care that much) is when people equate "old" to "cheap" and only want this year's model. The F430 and Gallardo are great cars, but if I had a choice between either of those and a Daytona or F40 the new cars would be gathering dust. I was only a toddler when the Daytona came out, so this isn't simply a matter of liking cars from my childhood...

Aesthetics are up to you. IMO, except for the Porsche 911, most modern sports cars look alike. I have to look twice to distinguish an F430 from a 360 (I have to see the tail lights), and the Gallardo and Murcielago are basically the same shape with different headlights and scoops. It's all CAD/CAM product. At some point, design trends will shift again and the amoeba will fall out of fashion in the same way the wedge did (Esprit, 308, Boxer...)

As far as modern interiors go, again, cars with video screens and airbags all tend to look the same to me, and they stand to be very dated. Think about your cell phone from 4 years ago. Would you carry it now, assuming it still works? In a few years, all this tech will start to seem like an 8-track tape deck, while the Dinos, Daytonas, Boxers and 308/328s, with their analogue gauges, chromed/gated shifters and toggles and knobs will still look like classic cars. Americans, as Peter said, are a bit quick to toss out the old without taking a look at its inherent beauty and significance.

Now, if you can trade your Lambo in three years and get a 2011 model, and keep doing this, you'll always have the fast car and the new technology. But I don't think you have to get on that treadmill to make yourself happy in a car.

Even though the new cars perform better, I think that they are not as attractive as the older ones. Everything today is designed in a wind tunnel to be able to go 180+ mph (even though the vast majority of owners never even come close to the maximums). This has the effect of forcing a certain uniformity. A car like the old Dino would never be produced today and it is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, as well as one of the most fun to drive in the real world.

You can like what you like and don't have to care for the older stuff.... but at least respect it and when talking with other owners show it!

Every car that a company like Ferrari, Lambo, (insert your favorite) produced in the past has led them to the point at which they are today. You don't have to care for the designs, functionality, performance, sophistication etc of the previous models, but don't be a snob about it and you should be fine.

New cars may have better electronics & are definately more reliable but they've lost a lot of their charm.

a big part of the problem of course is govt interference which F has no control over

The 430 is a good looking car that does a lot of things well, it also does a great impression of a burning marshmellow :)

The 599 which claims to knock my F40 off its thrown is ok but it sure as H doesn't have half the presence or raw feel of my F40

When a 599 rolls up you could be excused for mistaking it for a Corvette. That will NEVER happen w an F40

Also in my mind there will never be a car more beautiful than a 512TR

The Schmenzo looks like a cubist nightmare or an escaped extra from a Godzilla movie

The 612 is far too easy to knock around. Did Pininfarina call in GM's Asstech designer for that DoDo ? :)

I don't get offended. Personally, I look forward to the day when most of the collectors who appreciate the old cars are dead, so the run-up on vintage Ferrari prices stops, and prices fall back to affordable levels.

    Maybe in 25 years or so . . .

New cars so much farther ahead in terms of performance, technology and engineering that it is hard not to like them more.

Then again, not everyone is into Italian cars for the above mentioned reasons.

If you are after "performance, technology, and engineering", I think you should buy a Porsche, not a Ferrari.

Ferraris are (were) about magic and soul, and the soul has been heavily diluted since Enzo died. That was a while ago...

    Cheers,

    Julio

performance, technology, and engineering...isn't being on the edge of those, regardless of era, also what makes a Ferrari? i think the distinction lies in the way Ferrari uses tech and engineering, combining it with their interpretation of the subjective areas of a car...looks, sound, etc...

Yes, I should have written "If you are ONLY after performance...".

I like your description of what makes the Ferrari distinction, but I would add history and tradition as essential ingredients (absent in a Lambo).

    Cheers,

    Julio
