Going to look at a red/tan 1990 348 GTS this week. Bought locally new. Not sure how many owners it has had. Car fax did not show that. It is the later serial number 1990 so it has some of the upgrades they did mid year in 1990. Odometer shows 17,000 miles. Not sure if that is correct as it seems the speedo is easily disconnected. My guess is that it may be correct as it was a trade in and possibly the previous owner(s) were not the type to disconnect the speedo. Who's to say though? Always seems to have been serviced at a Ferrari dealer. They did an engine out but just did the belt. No seals. I am guessing the engine was dry so they decided to leave the seals alone. I asked a few times about the clutch. They told me it had been replaced at one time. I'll see if they can show me any service records. Not sure if it is a dual or single disc clutch. They repainted the front and put on new rear tires. Reading all the info on 348's makes me worry if I should buy it. I want to buy it. A red 348 GTS is the Ferrari for me. I have a 308 replica (88 Mera) so I do not want a 308 or 328. I will keep my Mera so I need something that looks much different than a 308. I had originally considered a Testarossa but decided against that for several reasons. To look at a later 355 means a much higher price. I like the look of a 348. Looks very exotic. I expect to pay in the low to mid 50's. Have it for maybe 5 years or more and sell it. I expect it to cost me around $15,000-$20,000 to own it for those 5 years or so. Depreciation plus a major service after 5 years. Any advice? I feel a lot of anxiety. But once I drive it I'm sure I'll be hooked.

    My 88 Mera: http://www.rodneydickman.com/Mera/mera_pics.html

    Mera info: http://www.fiero.net/mera/

Bought it about 14 years ago for $18,600 because 308's were in the $50,000 range. Way too much for me at the time. Put over $30,000 more into it (all my own labor, $30,000 just in parts etc.). Although a replica it is a very nice car. Made my own parts because no one sold the parts I needed. Started my own business selling these parts. Have done well. I deserve to own a real Ferrari. So I will.

    $18,600 + $30,000= $48,600 but did not buy a 308 at that time for $50,000?

Bought it for $18,600 and put over $30,000 into it over the next 10-12+ years. A few thousand here, a few thousand there. Had it been all in the first year I would have bought a real 308 as I would have been able to afford it. When I bought it $18,600 was a lot to me. But I had to have it as it was a nice car and my only chance at the time of owning anything close to a real 308. I do laugh that I ended up putting that much into it and could have bought a real 308 for the same money. Oh well. The up side is that it started my business which now allows me to buy a 348. :)

I could have afforded to buy a real 308 at the time if I would have cashed in on most of my investments and my rental income property real estate. But I was money investment wise and still am. That has paid off well.

A 308 was always and will always be the car of my dreams. But I will not sell my Mera. I have my too much time and effort invested into it and I am very proud of it. So I have little interest in buying a real 308. The 348 is my choice.

Lets don't turn this into a replica bashing post. Let's help the guy with the 348.

If you get a bad feeling about the car, then walk away. There will always be other red 348s. And even if the mileage is right, that's not necessarily good.

Find one that's been driven. Don't be scared away from a car with 30-40k miles! That's only 2-3k miles/year. I would say a 93 or 94 with higher miles would be the ideal car. All the improvements and upgrades - along with being exercised regularly...

Whereabouts do you live? Think about filling out your profile.

    Good luck!

No one is bashing anyone Crawford. It made no sense until he explained it later.

Mera, I had the same worries before buying mine. I read posts here regarding problems encountered with 348s that made me freak out. Saw the same with 355s too. But then took my time looking for a well sorted one with a major service just completed and just went for it. I always owned Porsches and they are very reliable, so it was scary for me to switch to Ferrari. But I always wanted a Ferrari and decided it is time.

Just be patient, learn as much as you can about the 348 and if you have any questions or need any help, just post your concern here and any of our brothers will respond promptly.

Good luck and we hope you join the brotherhood soon.

Last 348 Targa's in the USA was the 1992 and they seem to be somewhat rare. 91's seem easier to find. They did make the limited production 348 Speciale. Ferrari did make 93-95 Targa's but they did not come to the USA. To bad. I would spend a bit more for a 94-95 Targa if I could get one. :(

I just love a targa top Ferrari. I can't see how they decided that all 348's after 92 would only be convertibles.

I am in the Milwaukee, WI area.

Sent you an email, let me know if you get it. Need details etc but that is a long way from me and I would need to fly out and see it. Long flight. :(

I bought that car in November!!! :) :)

Going back to the 1990 car - check if they have all the service records for the car. Do a PPI with compression and leakdown test. If the car has a recent major with belt service then I would say $48-50K is a good price for for a 17k mile car. Best of luck!

Did you fly out to look at it before you bought it? Or did you buy it without looking at it.

I communicated with the dealership on the phone asking about various details/pictures. The dealership - Steve Harris Imports - has an awesome reputation for being straight shooters. So I was sure that I wasnt going to buy a lemon.

I flew over; did a test drive and got a PPI done the same day. The car checked out fine. I bought the car on the spot and drove it to Houston the next day. Fantastic road trip!

With a Ferrari being an common car - particularly the 348 which sold in relatively small numbers - you might need to travel to get your car. I saw a local car - but it wasnt in that great condition.

    Pre-purchase inspection...

I'm in Nashville and bought my car from CA. Didn't see the car in person 'til it was delivered (more exciting that way!). Had a thorough PPI done in CA.

Pre Purchase Inspection. It will cost ~$300. Insist on a compression and leakdown test.

Can be done at an authorized Ferrari dealership or a reputed independent Ferrari shop.

Do not buy a 348 without proper inspection. There may be problems that the previous owner may not be aware of. Also do a reasonably long test drive - 40 mins. Try a hot start also.

A 348 that has always been serviced at a Ferrari dealer could be a good find - most of us with older cars take them elsewhere, in my experience. There are some great independent techs who do the same work at a better rate, but it's always good to find a "money-no-object" car. I don't think seals are part of the usual major service. Tensioner bearings and water pump should have been done, though.

Every old (pre-360) Ferrari that has been driven seems to have had a front-end respray. My car has had it done twice. As long as there's no collision/frame damage, I wouldn't sweat that.

Ferrari's eat tires - makes sense it would have new rubber at 17K miles. You can check things like seat bolster and pedal wear as a quick sanity check on mileage, but there's no guarantee. Best way is to have a thick service history file on the car. That's not a guarantee either, but reflects a more conscientious - and maybe scrupulous - owner.

I agree about your targa comments. Be prepared for some squeaks and rattles, but overall I find my 328 GTS top far more convenient than former ragtops I've had.

Given that he wants a 348, and loves the looks, he should go for a 348. If it were up to me, I'd sell the replica and go for a 308/328. The replica may be a quality vehicle, but it would be a totally new experience anyway, as it would be his first Ferrari and arguably the classic Ferrari shape of the late 20th century.

EDIT: Looking over the pics, I think the interior, engine and gearbox are Fiero. Again, just my two lira, but I think a drive in a real 308/328 would be a revelation.

I did the same, geographically reversed - bought from a dealer in NC, shipped to CA. No issues.

The Serie Speciale were imported into the US in 93 and 94. Some of the guys here can give you specific numbers on the 93s, but it was somewhere shy of 100. Not sure how many TS (targa). There were 15 of the '94s, all TS (targa). I just bought #5, and I know of two other '94 owners here.

There are usually one or two Speciale models for sell in the country. Here's one:

Finally, since no one else has mentioned it, you MUST read the 348 "bible:" http://www.the348.com/Tech/348.html

Hey Rodney. Glad to see you getting a 348 soon. I think I've only bought 1 or 2 parts from you (shifter linkage) so does that entitle me a ride sometime? Good luck. Greg Z

Continental is delivering it today. I will drive down and follow it on the way up. Cost was a wash between driving it home and having it trailered up. If I insured it and drove it home it will sit until spring. Cost of the insurance for those 4 months (would be insured year round) is about the same as trailering it up. I will look for other insurance options before I title it and license it in the spring. This way I can ease into driving it in the spring instead of having to drive it thru Chicago the first day I own it. Not that I looked but I wonder if any insuance company would like to insure it for one day then go into storage for 4 months. Not worried. I like that it is being trailered and I have nothing much to worry about. Unless something happens on the way up. Then I will bum out.

Nice car - congrats! Hopefully you will be able to take it out a couple times if the weather is good. I have taken my car out in 30-40F weather a few times and didnt face a problem. We dont have ice here though. As long as you take it easy in the first 2 gears you should be okay. The long, progressive throttle and long rev band means it really driveable in inclement weather. Of course proper rubber is required if it si snowing :)

As to the insurance, I have no idea. Dont you need the insurance to be able to register the car in your name? Also if your car is damaged or stolen, then who would pay for it?

Allstate lets me add a car automatically upon delivery as long as I give them a call. I did that recently and then moved the insurance to another carrier. It was insured with Allstate for about a week. Total cost : about $11. I think you will really enjoy the new 348. Have fun in the spring!

Just got back. Having it trailered was well worth the money. So many semi trucks, stones flying etc. I would have been bummed to drive it thru all that. It shifted in the trailer some. Put a small paint chip in the wheel well. Not enough to bend any steel. Small. Maybe 2 mm in diameter very low near the black bottem paint. They are going to send me some touch up paint. He did not cross the straps on the rear as he usually does because the straps would have rubbed on the frame. Not too worried about the small chip. Drove it around the block here. I am guessing they must have spread some salt on some day they thought it may snow. Seems there was salt lying in the road. It is dry here so no salty water. Hopefully no salt pieces got anywhere to do any damage once it sees a rainy (doubtful) day or I happen to wash it. If anyone can post some pictures let me know and I'll email some over.
