With the engine out, I am ready to adjust the valves. Are there generic valve shims that I could buy.

    Thanks.

Standard Fiat 124 shims...for all years.
    Also fits all 2-valve Ferrari's...
Possibly some Volvos (though I'm not 100% on that)

International Auto Parts in VA has kits...
Or you can buy them individually for $4-5 each.

    Regards,
    David

assuming you have already had the sodium exhaust valves replaced for solid ones? If you haven't, now is the time to consider it....

as said, all the 2V Ferrari engines are the same.... Fiat and Volvo best sources... Make extra sure you don't drop under the minimum thickness... if the shim ends up being too thin, the cam can strike the edge of the bucket and cause damage...

Hi Dave: I have been away for a while.......nice to be back. I sold my TR; now I am working on the Boxer.

Phil: I plan on doing the valve adjustments, followed by a leak-down test. If things are to spec, I will leave well enough alone.

Bayless Racing (Fiat, Lancia) has the best selection of shim sizes I could find in the US. You can't do precise adjustments with the selection that International Auto Parts stocks.
Bayless will also sell individual shims.

I understand 246 Dino, 2V 308, and all Boxers use the same FIAT shim.
If I remember corectly, I got a spring compressing tool and wedge from T. Rutland.

ok, but if completion time is your only reason for NOT doing the sodium valve replacement, I urge you to re-consider.... if you can afford it, and have the time... replace them.

I've still got mine in at the moment and am happy to roll the dice... but I'll do a belt service/head rebuild and change them in our winter... which is May

Phil: I can afford it, and I have the time.........it is Winter in Wisconsin. I don't plan on taking the Boxer out till May.

However, I do believe in one thing..........if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!!!!!!

I respect your opinion, as well as your contributions to this forum.........both being VERY informative.

It's been 5 years since my last major, on the Boxer. After removing the belts, this weekend, they look like brand new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it wasn't for the oil leaks, etc., I wouldn't be doing the major.

For those who have a question about doing a major every 5 years........don't fear!!!!!!!!! After having 9 Ferraris, it is my opinion that it is the LEAKS that cause one to do the major every 5 years and NOT the belts.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks Hanks (hey, it rhymes!)

Amazingly, mine isn't leaking anything that reaches the ground at the moment... and it hasn't had so much as an oil change or spark plug out since 1999.... it's been mostly laid up, but I've done nearly 1000 miles in the last 6 weeks.

Henryk, the valve shims I used were Volvo. Mine is the 2v 308 though. The shims were from the Volvo 200 series cars...also i think the same as the 700 series shims. The dealer will know. Good luck.
