Been pulled over for no license plate??

Just wondering...and if so what did you do???

 

I told the fine policeman that it didnt come with one. He said ok and drove off.

 

I got pulled over last summer driving my 350Z without my front license plate. I think its normal for a sports car not to have a front license. I got warned and been told to put it on, then go to a police station and show it. So I put it back, go to the police station and when I got there, they didn't even look at it and told me that I'm good to go. I was really pissed during that time.

 

I got pulled over once (M3) and I would've had to drill holes in my front bumper but the cop let me off. But I don't know if the next cop who pulls me over for this will be so kind.
If I say it didn't come with one will that always work?

 

I was pulled over the week I got my new car and just showed the officer some paperwork I had with me. He confessed he wasn't sure of the policy, told me to check with the DMV, and wrote me a warning.

 

certainly you mean you were pulled over for something else and he inquired about your plate. He didn't pull you over because you had no plate and then stated he didn't know policy?

 

Not all states require a front plate. I would buy a property in a state that does not require the front plates (or rent an apartment). Then register the car in that state. A state that requires front plates normally has exemptions for out of state cars. If anyone asks, tell them you drive the car more than 6 months in the other state, and the other state requires any cars that are driven more than 6 months be registered in that state. Chances are most of you only drive your Ferrari in the summer, so you won't drive more than 6 months anyways.

 

I live in Pa. Don't need one.

Buy a propery or rent somewhere else ONLY because of the front plate law ?

Now, I could see buying an acre somewhere in a low-tax state and claiming residency there for tax reasons, but not just because of the physical plate requirement itself.

Minnesota is a front plate state, but a couple years back they made an allowance for 68 and earlier cars not required to show front plate. Anyway. I havnt had a front plate on the MB 380 since we brought it home in 97, never had one on the Ford diesel in the 5 years I owned it, and niether Ferrari ever ran around with a front plate, almost 1200 miles in number two the last two months. I have never been stopped of questioned about any of them. I think its got a lot more to do with what time of day, your location, how your driving, and what you look like. I realise all of those are basically racial profiling, but (surprise) cops been doing that since they started wearing badges.

 

It all boils down to whether or not your state issues two plates. You can be cited for failing to display the front plate. I keep the front plate behind the seat and if I get pulled over I say it fell off and just haven't gotten around to fixing it. In all the years I've had the cars, I've only been pulled over once and received a warning.

 

You should have told him to go up and take a closer look, and when he was in front of the car, you step on the gas pedal...... Then you will be making many, shiny new license plates at your new full time job.

 

I was at my Fathers house in Denver over the Holidays and parked his wifes Cayenne downtown to eat for lunch. I came back to a ticket on the windshield for no front plate, I wasn't eve driving it! I thought Ca cops were bad!

 

The day after I got my new car I was pulled over for speeding and had no plate on at all since I got it from a private seller. Eventually I got off with a citation for not changing the address on my license within 30 days of moving, (GA law,) and I didn't get a mention of the plate after I showed the bill of sale.

A week later there was an officer in traffic behind me at a traffic light who pulled me over for no plate and I thought he was going to put me in jail! Absolutely ballistic, he couldn't believe I had nothing on. I taped a "tag applied for" piece of paper in my back window, wrote a date on it, (one month from date of purchase,) and didn't get any more attention.

 

Great story, a little off the topic, but close:

in 1999, I had a 348TS. Was flying my plane to Europe, and like all 348s, it had some issues. My best friend Doug (Doug348) told me that he'd take the car to his mechanic, get it fixed, and would return it to my hanger after the repairs were made. Unfortunately, he didn't go along with the mechanic on the test ride after the repairs, and the moron mechanic totaled the car. I was sitting in the Eiffel Tower, having dinner, when my cell rang with Doug on the other end, telling me that the car was totaled. At any rate, I told him that he'd have to deliver the new car, when I got one as his contribution to this fiasco.

Bought a 94 348 spider in Chicago. It wasn't registered, had no plates, I had the title. Doug flew back with a copy of the title, and I had to use the car 2 days later, so he had two days to drive from Chicago to SF. I'm told that he went across Utah, no plates, no registration, no proof of ownership, etc., at an average of 140 mph. Never got stopped, no hassles. Made it on time.

Happened to me once, in my ex-SLK. I got a warning for speeding, and a $10 'fixer' ticket (no points). So I used some double-sided emblem tape, stuck the plate to the front bumper, had the po-lice sign off that it was there, and that was that.

 

NV is a front plate state, but typically the police only worry about it if they stop you for something else(there are exceptions, of course). That being said, legislation was recently passed stating if the car has no front plate provision, no front plate is required. Seems reasonable to me.

 

I guess I've been lucky driving over 20 years without the front plate and never got pulled over for that. Knock on wood.

 

Dealer plates.. I never register the car until I'm ready to sell it and I have to. I'd rather spend the $3-4k in taxes I have to pay upon registration down the road then pay it a year early, just makes sense financially, maybe not legal but worst that's happened so far is getting pulled over and them just telling me to get a tag.

As far as front plates, Oklahoma doesn't require them which is where the cars stay registered, screw drilling holes in my front bumper and ruining the look of my car, I'll put up with a $15 ticket if I have to.

 

Drove my TVR for 30 years and have driven my Ferrari for 5 years with no front tag...haven't been stopped yet for running only one tag. (knocks on wood)

 

keep the 2nd tag in the car. I drove a Corvette and Ferrari from 1980 - 1993 without a front plate. Then I moved to Florida; no front plate needed here.

 

New York is a 2 plate state. I attend a car meet on most Sunday AMs (Captree, LI) with up to 600 cars on a good day. ¾ of the cars do not exhibit a front plate. The cops routinely patrol the meet but don’t enforce the front plate rule. Now going through a toll both at either a tunnel or bridge makes you an easy target. I have never been stopped with my 308. Go figure.

 

Tell them the bracket fell off and a new one is on order.

It's got to be a slow day, PO/SOB cop or one whose "fishing" for other things to take the time to stop you for missing a front plate.
