This pic was taken at Village Coffee Roadster in Woodland Hills CA on New Year Eve. I was intrigued when I saw this one because it is a special edition. In attempts to broaden my historical knowledge of Ferrari racing heritage, can anyone direct me as to where I can find more information about this car or car type.

Also, I am very curious as to the purpose of the red light lens that is in an unusual location. It is located next to the rear window on the passenger side. It sits in the opposite location as the gas cap on the fender.

There is also a cover over only one of the sides of the exhaust. Why is that? Any information would be helpful as I fell in love with this car and now am interested beyond belief.

I waited around for the owner, but took off on a ride with several 360's and 430's through the canyons. It was a great day.

    Any information is greatly appreciated.

One more question: Did this car come with the roll cage from Ferrari and the plexiglass deflector on the hood?

Sorry guys if I am asking too many questions on this car. F-chat just came back on and I have been waiting to ask these from people who appreciate these cars.

I'm on a dial-up so only looked at 1 picture (the first one). The car is a 250 SWB (short wheel base). I'm sure the other guys know the serial number and race history (assuming it is original rather than a rebody).

    Regards,

I believe that was to notify the pit crew that the car would be coming in on the next lap (if unscheduled).

And if I'm wrong, I expect to be corrected (politely... ;) )

This competition SWB, 2689GT, is my favorite. It finished 3rd overall and 1st in class at the 1961 Le Mans. It was driven by Pierre Noblet and Jean Guichet.

As mentioned the shield over the left tail pipes is to prevent fuel from flowing down from the fuel filler and onto the hot exhaust, a lesson learned the hard way. Fuel was added by gravity flow without dry break connections in those days.

The signaling light was used as indicated to signal a pit stop, but I believe it was more frequently used at the signaling pits located at the Mulsanne corner, the crew there would call ahead to the pits to alert them of the incoming car.

The roll bar is non original, much more substanial than when raced in 1961.

The car is owned, AFAIK, by Bruce Meyer.

    Thanks for posting the pictures.

Thank you for the clarification. I've seen cars with both red & green lamps on the side; do you know what the distinction was? Perhaps mechanical problem (red) and routine fuel/water/oil (green)?

Also lamps illuminating the roundel, but their purpose is obvious (aid to timing & scoring through the night).

Yes, that one is a grand example!

    Thanks gentlemen.

I suppose it came down to whatever they thought they needed (or had) at the time the car was being prepared; no hard and fast rules then.

I can't overstate how happy I am that Bruce Meyer is USING 2689GT. One of the rare "61 Comp" SWBs, it is like night and day compared to a standard SWB. Getting it rolling takes a little finesse, as it is WAY over-carbureted (size 46) and barely runs below 4000 RPM or so. But once under way, it's like no other Ferrari of the era. Congratulations to Bruce, a true enthusiast!

Ed -- agreed on all counts. Bruce is a really great car guy. Even Hot Wheels recognized that, by putting out a boxed set of models from "Bruce Meyer's Garage."

Now if we could just get him to use the TRC a little more, the car you helped me buy years ago with some very, very good advice....

Is that the car you bought for $2800.00?

You and Frank Gallo are responsible for instilling a dream in me that I can never hope to satisfy; ALL those adds you guys put in Road & Track for SWBs at $3000.00 - $5000.00 dollars ($5k got you a really nice one). My paper route was only bringing in about $14.00 a week back then; the SWB was just a bit out of reach (not to mention my lack of driver's license).

No hard feelings though, here we are nearly forty (<40) years later and I can rib you about it! Thanks for all the daydreams :)

....and only if we had kept all the cars we owned. I remember buying TWO used Abarth 1000 twin cam cars for $800 :(
