If you want it to be perfect, have it media blasted, then hi temp primer and paint. (por is excellent)
just a thought, check for an exhaust leak above that spot. may or may not be anything, but it's odd that's in one spot. and por-15 is great.
I've seen many 308's with rust in the center area of the exhaust "diaper", just like you're pic -- and some are worse than others. Mine had it as well. Did like others here and removed it, sanded it, primed and repainted it -- it looked nearly new when finished. However, in the meantime, a NOS one popped up for sale on eBay -- so I bought it for around $700 (IIRC). Kept the old one on the shelf for a spare.
I stripped mine and used BBQ black paint. Looks good and has held up well. One word of caution though.... it was a real bear to strip. Seems that they used some sort of filler to cover some of the machine/work marks on the piece before painting.
Sand it smoothe then get it powder coated. I did that in my 308 2V and it turned out great! No problem with rust afterward I also poder coated the two vents at the rear behind the wheels, they were pretty rusted but a good sanding, smoothing & the powder coat "filled in" the rest.
No need to sand if you sending it off for powder coating. They will media blast (or sand blast) the parts first...
A simple rust-conversion paint will work in the mean time and you can find the stuff cheap and at any FLAPS. The spot treatment I did on my old VW over 17 years ago is still holding up (still black and no rust). Simply wire brush the big flakes off (you could use your finger for what you have) and dab/brush the 'paint' directly on the rust. It will dry black. One of these days I'll have the $ to get a proper paint job...
I talked to a well respected body shop today.... gonna take the part up to him, he will media blast it and powder coat it. thanks for the advice!
Mike--its no big deal. Any good body shop can do it. Just make sure its re-sprayed the correct falt black. Skip McCabe did mine. PS..I am selling my car if you know anyone interested. Jerry Fisher 847-433-1022
I checked out the por15 site but was unable to determine if the black they sell is gloss, semigloss or mat. Does anyone know?
I know that I have purchased a flat black heat resistant paint from them. I seem to recall that they had another black/line of product that the sheen was determined buy the air pressure you sprayed it at. Best thing is to call them and speak to a tech. I'm set up to spray my own, the POR is pretty easy to work with but you really need to know the process and materials you are working with...that's why I call the tech's all the time =)
