He signed a 5 year $500 million contract, so yes. Although he pays for all production costs of his show, including everyone else's salary. He did also get a $225 million stock grant early last year as well. So in reality he's made more than $100 mill a year. I think Forbes has him at around $300 million for last year.

That's crazy, most people come to me and ask me how they want to retire and only have 5 million dollars in their bank account. And this guy makes 100 million a year. Life in USA is really crazy lol.

The show is more than that, after all it is just about the biggest, most known radio show ever. He also almost single handedly saved Sirius. 600,000 suscribers when he signed to just over 6 MILLION in about 24 months.

Stern didnt save Sirius. They were growing without him. Look at the numbers over the same time period for XM, they grew at the same rate without Stern. Look at the cost of acquiring subscribers over the same period, Sirius spent a TON on marketing.

Stern made a great deal, no question, but I dont think is was a wise choice for Sirius.

its funny that stern can pull in 100 mill a year doing a radio show and nobody complains, but god forbid somebody makes 50 mill (granted in bonus) as the CEO of one of the largest banks in the world.

    gotta love the american public.

I don't think he pays staff salary, because if I recall right a conversation reguarding Artie said that he makes his deal directly with Sirius.

She looks like a very young Anna-Nicole Smith and he looks like a Slash wannabe. :D:D
He has done well for himself. :) I work hard to barely earn AU$100K per year and he is making US$100mill per year. They reckon the less you do the more you earn. :p:p

And he just got a bonus of more than $80 million!

Nasty and weird looking? Do you wear glasses? If not, I suggest you see an eye doctor. If yes, I suggest you see an eye doctor because your prescription is not strong enough.

Stern didn't save Sirius? Are you kidding me? You think they would have anywhere close to as many subscribers today if they didn't have Stern? If he wasn't there, they'd still have less subscribers than XM, and be fighting for mere survival.

And he stands to make a lot more if subscriptions continue to rise at current rates (there are clauses in his contract for bonuses based on subscription numbers).

Whether Stern saved Sirius is up for debate, but Sirius definitely got a lot of attention when they gave Stern a $500m contract. The publicity alone helped Sirius and Stern has definitely brought in new subscribers.

No I am not kidding you.

Sirius still has fewer subscribers than XM. By about the same number they did before they signed Stern.

The industry as a whole has grown. Stern had little effect on the Sirius subscriber base.

    here are the facts:

Stern announced his move to Sirius on October 8, 2004. According to their quarterly earnings report, Sirius closed out the third quarter of 2004 with 662,289 subscriptions.

Meanwhile, XM announced in their quarterly earnings report that they had closed out the third quarter of 2004 with 2,516,023 subscriptions.

    a difference of 1,853,734

Now Sirius has 6.3M and XM has 7.7M

    a difference of 1.4M

So Sirius has closed the gap by 400k subscribers.

one also needs to look at how Sirius counts subscriptions. For every new car that rolls off the line with a Sirius radio in it, they count it as a subscriber. Not completely honest.

I listen to Stern on Sirius in my M5 on the way to work every morning...he is very entertaining. I find Sirius programming better than XM which I have on DirecTV at home.

Frank, are you having a low self esteem day...? :)

In two sentences, you told us that you have Sirius satellite radio, XM satellite radio, an M5, a job, a house, a television and DirecTV...

    So according to your numbers;
Pre-Stern: Sirius had 26% the amount of subscribers that XM had.

Stern era: Sirius now has 82% the amount of subscribers that XM has.

Sirius now has 9.5 times the subscribers that they had prior to Stern. XM has only grown by 3 times the subscriptions in the same amount of time.

Sirius is growing at a much greater rate than XM, and it is entirely due to Stern.

Why do you think they gave Stern over $80 million as a bonus this year? 'Cause he's such a nice guy???

therein is the danger in doing percentages with small numbers. if you sell 1 widget one month, and 2 the next you can claim your business has grown 100%. It has, you've still only sold 3 widgets total.

once the numbers get bigger, it evens out. Look the number of susbcriptions per month over the same time period, you will see steady growth from both companies, no big spikes that can be attributed to additional programing.

Also look at how much was spent to acquire each new subscriber over the same time period, Sirius spent nearly 5x what XM did, and has bled red ink for it. You claim gains are entirely due to Stern, I say you arent looking at the bigger picture.

If all the Sirius gains are due to Stern, Sirius is in trouble in a large way. XM managed to add 5.5M subscribers without Stern and spending condsiderably less per subscriber over the same time period.

Neither company impress' me yet. They both are still in the red. I've bought and sold stock in both and made decent $ from both. Neither one is a fundamentally sound company and sometime soon they will have to pay the piper. Merger, failure or continued burning of investors money? Who knows.

100% with ya. We in the wax household avert our eyes from his Girlfriend (a still active model, believe it or not), Beth Ostrosky *retch*, and hit "mute" *retch* when she co-hosts Casino Cinema on Spike. One "Siriusly" Nasty-ass looking thing *retch*.

Siriusly, folks, Market Share was disproportionate to XM prior to Stern's hire. Soon, Sirius will surpass XM and, if XM doesn't feed the ears of the masses* through the lowest common denominator, they'll be eclipsed and risk going the way of Beta tapes.
    _______

Analogous to the discussion, consider this bit of Trivia regarding McDonald's 2nd owner Ray Kroc, who took bringing burger, fries and shakes to the masses* and business acumen to a whole 'nother level:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Kroc#Trivia

The Mark Knopfler song Boom, Like That (found on his 2004 album Shangri-La) tells Ray Kroc's story written from his point of view ("You gentlemen ought to expand / you're going to need a helping hand, now / so, gentlemen, well, what about me? / We'll make a little business history"). The song references and uses several quotes from Kroc's autobiography ("Competition? Send 'em south / If they're gonna drown / put a hose in their mouth" in the last verse, "dog eat dog / rat eat rat" in the chorus) and even mentions Kroc's name in the chorus.

I was at a restaurant in the Hamptons in August 2005 and HS with his girlfriend were there-Howard sat at the table behind me-I could have tapped him on the shoulder. Didn't know he was going to be at that restaurant that night but heard he was a regular there on Saturday nights. My observations:

1-Stern was very down to earth-said hello to everyone. Very gracious....

2-Beth is attractive and she seemed cool also.

    3-Stern drove his A8.

4-Sadly, no porn stars were in sight....

He found a niche and filled it-don't blame HS for that.....
