About 3 weeks ago I went to a bar half a block from my place in the French Quarter called "Johnny Whites"

JW's is the only bar to have never closed during hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. It is on the corner of Bourbon and Orleans and actually became a meeting point for French Quarter residents and those who came down to help. National Guard, NOPD, NYPD, NYFD, you name it.

    Anyways, it's a cool place!

So I walk in and the bartender says to me, "Hey, you outta meet this guy, he is walking from NY-LA!"

I started engaging conversation with the guy and it turned out to be quite interesting. He came all the way from England to do this journey after his wife passed away from cancer January 2006. He was in New Orleans taking a break from his journey for a couple of weeks. At this point he had walked from New York to Dallas in about 5.5 months. He carries a tent with him to sleep!

After a bit he says the walk is to raise money for the Association for International Cancer Research.

He has a blog on a website he had made to document his trip and some of the entries are quite interesting. The guy is extremely well spoken.

Our conversation was essentially about how when I was growing up my father would take me on rounds with him in various hospitals. My father is a hematologist/oncologist and he taught me from a young age to be respectful of everyone because you never know their situation.

I told the guy that I would tell my father about him, which I did, and that I would tell some others about his journey as well.

His website is http://www.justgiving.com/uswalk if you feel like taking a peek. I found it inspirational :)

    Very interesting.

Not to sound like a "girlyboy" but automatically an alarm rings in my head. With all the disappearances these days and what not, I just don't find it safe to sleep in a tent alone in the middle of nowhere. I hate the say that watching too much news has given me this stupid fear. It's the only country where murders and crime are priority for evening news I feel like. Sorry for the hi-jack

I saw a story on the news about him the other day. Pretty interesting story and ambitous goal.

I thought the exact same thing. Not sure where he is going to sleep in the middle of West Texas!
No kidding? Looks like he is going to easily surpass his goal. Very pleasant individual.
