What wax/paint sealant do you use? On cars, I usually use Rejex or Menzerna FMJ. But I was wondering if there are any other products that you guys use on your planes for maximum protection.

I wash the plane, but the only thing that I use wax on is the boots, and that process is pretty complex, you've got to strip the rubber, then wash it off, and then it takes too applications of the "sealer" wax. If done right the boots look like they are made of some very glossy material. I'm getting ready to submit the plane to the American Bonanza Society to apply for the Bonanza of the Month (I know, it isn't a Bonanza, it's a Baron, but that's the title that they use when they publish the monthly magazine), so I'll post some of those pictures when I've got them done.

our detailers use a teflon based wax with no silicates in it. on larger aircraft its common to spot paint areas after work has been done, or to touch up cosmetics for the customers. i know Gulfstream specs what products you should use, so i would not use a car wax on an aircraft unless its on the approved data list for the aircraft. but i only work on Gulfstreams, for Gulfstream, so i have no experience with the smaller aircraft. the silicates in some cleaners and waxes make following paint touch ups impossible.

On my dads diamond star we use rejex. The detailer used a carbuna solid wax every year. and on the citation x we use rejex to and extreamly expensive special sealer wax that is sold in limited numbers and is applyed once a year, I dont even know the name! But it looks fantastic!

    Jason,

I've heard airplane wax is so good because it will barely let any dust settle. The wax is used because dust increases drag on the plane...Am I hearing this correctly?

    TIA

How's your dad like the Citation X? It's an unusual and interesting choice for a personal plane.

My dad loves it. we use it every time we go to florida or mexico etc... My dad bought the plane because it is biblicly fast and has a nautical range that can get you from new york to paris. it goes 590 mph and is fairly comfertable at those speeds, you dont hear much and your ears dont pop as much as on commercial planes. its of course white with black and silver pinstripes and has a grey interior with piano black wood and custom carbon fiber accents. ( was done by the previous owner) my dad is the second owner and its a 2001. the diamond star on the other hand is the plane i fly durning the weekends for lessons, yes i'm flying.

Because it's one hell of a plane. One of my personal favorites. It's fast, beautiful and designed/built in my home town. I have engineer friends who worked on its development. It was/is a halo plane for Cessna and the community. The remark wasn't intended to be disparaging.

Having said that, I've always been curious as to what criteria someone uses when selecting said transportation. Having never been in the position to contemplate such a purchase I can only rely on second-hand info. An acquaintance of mine looked closely at the X and went with the Falcon Jet instead. When asked why, he said he thought it was a better jet and that it was highly recommended among his peers. Given that cost was not a consideration I've wondered why he and his friends didn't chose Xs. From the outside looking in I would've taken the X.

Vik, that's awesome. It's an extremely nice plane.

You said "It's an unusual and interesting choice for a personal plane" and I didn't understand as it is a common biz jet that is one of the fastest.

Your explanation clears it up a bit. It is a great plane. Though you said someone selected a Falcon instead of the X and that doesn't help me understand why. Which Falcon?

People / businesses select aircraft based on many variables like cost, speed, fuel efficiency, passenger cap., range, alt., payload, comfort, runway requirements, personal pref., location of service ctrs...... etc, etc... There is no one aircraft that can economically solve all trip requirements.

If you want to go fast, and you don't need much more than about 2200 nautical miles, the X makes a good choice, because of it's speed. However, compared to some of it's competition, it is short legged, and might have to stop, depending on the headwinds on some routes. But if you're just going a realtively short distance, makes a lot of sense.

    Jay,

I'm not sure if this statement is true or not. I always joke with my clients that their car will go faster after the detail, but I have no idea if its true or not. If its true, it would be a good idea to wash the plane once after its been waxed because it actually attracts dust. Especially Rejex.
