I figure we have some people out there who appreciate a few of the finer things in life... This is one example of my dad's incredible talent. It is an exquisite hand-carved 9-foot mantel he recently completed for a client in south Texas, and I am proud to be able to share it with you all. Dad is "retired" and living his dream, with some time on his hands that he uses to create a few really amazing one-of-a-kind works of art. I've also attached a link to a slide show with more photos of this same piece. Enjoy! http://jmcarvingphotos.spaces.live.com Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow, I am speachless. I looked at the slideshow but it looked like the same one- just more pics. Is this the guy that did the wooden F50?
I could do that, I just don't wanna Seriously, AMAZING work. I cannot concentrate for 5 minutes, forget about the countless hours that must have taken.
I believe this one took 3-4 months. He usually only works on one piece at a time. I don't believe so. He'll carve anything that anyone can take a picture of or dream up! Most peices are carved on basswood. He tells me it's much easier to work with because of the light grain.
I don't even know what to say... It's 3D art; absolutely amazing... Is the finished work coated with something to give it that glossy effect and/or to protect it...?
Yes, but I'm not sure what - lacquer I suppose. He uses whatever stain colors the client prefers. I'm usually speachless every time I see one of his completed works.
Here's another one of his carvings. Dad made this for me (and my wife and kids of course) out of a solid basswood log. For some reason the photo came out extremely glossy - it's not like that in reality. This piece will soon be on display at our lake house. Image Unavailable, Please Login
A few random samplings I copied from Dad's website today... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
As a professional sculptor I can say your dad is exceptionally talented. Beautiful stuff ( and its hard to drag a compliment out fo me ) I know hes retired and hes doing this because he loves it..but I hope hes not selling himself short financially..someone with his skill can commend a LOT of cash.
When he was first getting started a few years back, I thought then that he was selling himself short, but he always gave me the "starving artist" speach. Now it's a different story. Although I still don't think his prices come close to what his work is worth, he has received some well-deserved national recongition, and his prices have begun to reflect more of his talent. I will pass on your compliments! Thanks! Snake, I only wish I had inherited a fraction of his talent!
Absolutley amazing work! I wonder how cool a shot of me with my 308 would look set in wood!? Or just a nice big prancing horse!? COOOOOL!
