360 F1 Spider Problem

I have a problem with my 360 spider, can anyone help?
The car has done 5,200 miles and only gets used rarely, the problem is that you will be driving and for no reason you will loose throttle response, the car will still drive but you will have no power, if you pull over and turn off the engine then start again it will be fine, the problem will return after though. There are no problem lights on the dash, any ideas?

 

The 360 is throttle by wire, meaning the pedal is just a sensor and transmits pedal position electronically. So, somehow, the message the pedal is sending (based on your foot position) is getting lost between the pedal and gas going into the engine. My guess is that there is a lot of things inbetween. I have no idea what I am talking about, but the fact that you can "reboot" some computer somewhere maybe means it is the ECU? My wild a** guess since the football games are not on yet and I have nothing to do right now.

It is probably pretty easily diagnosed if hooked up to diagnostic and does not sound too overly complicated. Like it is a software issue.

 

I don't know anything either - but I like John's thinking. I'd get it to a dealer because they'll have the SD2 and get it checked out. Sort of sounds dangerous, but that's obvious.

I also am sitting around waiting on football .

Before you go to the dealer, switch off the battery master switch under the front bonnet, and leave it off for a about ten minutes, to allow the ECU to 'dump' it's contents.

Then switch it back on, start the engine with no throttle, and allow it to idle for five to ten minutes, during which time it will 're-educate' itself, but give it absolutely no throttle inputs during that learning period.

This procedure generally clears a lot of 'learned' faults.

 

Whatever you do do not take this advice. It will erase any fault codes in memory and diagnosis will be impossible.

If switching off the master switch, and dumping the contents of the ECU doesn't clear the problem (and it may well do so) won't the next re-occurrence of this power loss episode, simply re-write the 'lost' fault codes anyway?

 

here's the thing...

the 360C's suffer a throttle pedal bad connection frequently... yet display no faults in any SD2 diagnosis..

I've now changed almost all the cars I prep to weatherproof pedal connectors...

The white plastic plug down by the pedal could likely have a high resistance/open circuit... pull it apart and reconnect it a few times... use some contact cleaner... if that fixes it short term... plan to replace the whole plug mid term...

 

Every 360 street car I have experienced throttle problems with left a fault code.

 

Or he can fix it once and be done with it.

Ferrari is right. They should never have installed a battery switch. By far the cars with the most gremlins are the cars that the battery switch gets used.

 

hmmm, ok. Haven't seen a road car faulty yet so can't compare markets..

Also FWIW... the 360C also crap coil units when a few years old... engine idles with a misfire initially, then drops out under power soon after... again... no errors there either

 

That will set plenty of errors in a US street car.


Said it before and will say it again, US cars are different from the rest of the world.

 

In some ways a US car is advantageous then... but is so many not so!

So, just for my info... if a coil craps itself on a US car... despite receiving perfect signal etc... what error will it flag... just an O2 error from high hydrocarbons maybe? ... or what else?

 

Multiple misfire recognition.
O2 out of range.

Those are 2 I can think of right off the top of my head. There are others but cant remember right now.

I do work on some non US cars and am amazed how hard it is to set an error light but it does give much more freedom for fooling around with things.

 

how does it recognise the multiple misfire... does it do it from erratic crank speed sensor signal?..

Another I remembered "Cyl # ? Major Emmissions Beyond Max Threshold".

The O2's on 7 series Motronic react so fast that they can ID a cylinder that is missing.

I have a 360 here right now that had a momentary loss of a bank and it shows Multiple Misfire, Cyl 5,6,7,8 Major Emissions, Secondary Air Valve signal and Knock sensor circut.

It shows all happened one time only at an engine temp of 84 degrees at 3400 rpm.

Probably caused by a bad ground or a loose connector for the left bank.

 

I had this problem with my 360 spider.
It used to happen only when I nearly stalled the engine.
Never any other time.
Same , Have to pull over and re start.
