I placed my first ad on Ebay yesterday, and for the past day I've been idly wondering how I might have done a better job placing the ad. For example, I put a reserve price on the auction...I wonder if having no reserve would garner more bidders. I was fairly forthcoming in the actual ad...I wonder if I should have said less. Payment options, pictures, layout, paying for customized titles...I wonder how much of this I botched.

Anyone here do quasi-serious ebay selling? If so, what are some general tips you've found to be helpful?

I'm just talking over-all, in general Ebay selling. You know, those "strategies" that sellers use to help sell what they've listed.

There is no secret to ebay. No banner, reserve, etc. is going to get you more bids. If people want the item, they bid on it. If they are willing to shell out more money, they will. If they are cheap, then you wont get the money you are looking for. Honestly, you never get what you want for an item on ebay. Take how much you are looking for and minus 15%, that is your ebay price. Unless it is something in demand, or already fairly priced. The only thing you need to be a successful ebay seller is 1. Good feeback and 2. Confidence. You must make the buyer seem assured that they are getting the item in the condition you are presenting it in. Offer insurance, paypal, they love security. Take detailed pictures, answer questions, get to the main points about the item. Don't go into a life-long story on how you came upon this vintage 1980 Mr. Potato head, no one wants to know, they just want to know about the item they are buying. Be honest, be good, you'll do fine.

BTW, I call it FEebay lol, even though I have family at the company :p.

That's pretty much what I was wondering. I figured success on Ebay is pretty much 10% selling skill and 90% product. Thanks for the insight. And cross your fingers for me!

^ I offer an auction boosting service. I will bid on your auction to boost the price, for a fee of course...

    Good luck.

So what happens when you get stuck with the high bid, personally an auction boosting service sounds horrible and it's people like you that create the problems on eBay.

As for the original poster, your best course of action is to give as much info as possible with lots of pictures. Personally I find all the fancy graphics and overdone eBay pages kind of annoying. I'm more interested in the product that I'm getting and I just want the information on what condition it is in and I want to feel sure that it will be shipped to me in that same condition.

I'm just kidding, I do not actually offer that service. The main problems on ebay are frauds, non paying bidders, and scamming sellers whom are non true to the item condition and the item content.

Its easy to never win and never get stuck with the high bid, you have to do it correctly.
