help 308 gt4 timing belt fitting

I am going to replace one timing belt on my 1976 308 GT4.
I bought it and it's a Dayco but it's different from the one I have installed on my car. The nose of the one I have installed now are longer (about 2mm the new one and 3.5 the old one). I am waiting for a response from the commpany i bought from. I checked on the Dayco catalog and it seems they have only one fittment for all 308's. Anyone can help ?

why are you only replacing 1 belt?

 

Well that's not my poblem but i'll replay: They should have been changed since 6000 Km (2 years).
Only one of them has loosen a little, probably because of few oil leeks.
I own the car since few months (6 month and 200km !!!!) and i fill better if i change it.

I think what Dave what suggesting was, "If you already replacing one, why not just do both?"

 

And while you are at it, you should change the tensioners as well and make sure that the tensioner mechanism is working properly. With the tensioners in place, the belts should not be loose. If one of them is loose, I'd suspect the tensioner mechanism, not the belt stretching. They just don't stretch that much. In the meantime, don't drive the car with a loose timing belt as it could jump teeth.

 

I have all the parts removed for one belt and obviously will not drive it.
The second belt needs more work to be removed (compressor etc..) and i don't save any effort doing it now, i will do later.
I need to drive the car to check it's condition. The tensioner looks ok but you are right and may be I'll replace.

But my problem is another: I bought a dayco belt that they say it's ok but is a lot different than those i have installed.
Anybody knows about different pulleys configurations ?

are you talking about the tooth profile? the 308, 328 and 348 all share the same 'profile' different leangth of belt though. the profile shoudl be a trapaziod, and it's measured not from the belts backing but from the valley (Okay i was just trying to log into the dayco site to get you a pic but there down right now). what does the tooth profile look like?

 

I just put Dayco 94095 belts on my car and they were exactly the same as the Pirelli belts that came off. Did you get the right part? Maybe some pictures of the diferences would help answer your question.

 

lisander, if you're in doubt don't take chances untill you get all the facts and you're satisfied, it's better to be safe than sorry. Although Dayco is a good brand never had problem with them I've been using it on my Lancias for 22 years

here is the picture of the timing belts, by now now i don't have better.
The "noses" of dayco are a little smaller.
Tomorrow i am leaving for vacation, i will be back next month,
looking for the right belt.....

That picture says it all, one name comes to mind...Ed Gault.

those are the modified pullies using a curvlinear toothed belt. you're going to need a different belt, should be the same belt i'm using on my new setup. it's a Gates though Napa PN 250201 not sure if that crosses over the pond. the Gates number is T201 hope that clears it up a bit.

 

and that is provided Ed used a metric pulley if it's SAE then it's something else. your going to have to count the number of teeth on the cam pulley and the lower drive pulley. give me those numbers and i can tell you the belt you'll need.

the metric will be 36 cam and 24 lower.

 

a little more digging, he used the Gates T212 belt. here's the thread, hopefully you can update it.

I have been not able to find anything in europe.
Looking at the above thread, the pulleys shown seems identical to mine, the tensioner is different but i think it doesn't matter.
Can you please give me some reference to buy it online and eventually check it will fit ?

I have found a compatibility table ( if you like i can post it )

It says:
Gates: T-212 --> Dayco USA: 95212 --> Dayco Europe: 94451

I can find 94451 on the dayco site !

It says --> Profile: RP Dimension: 103 x 254H

Somebody knows how to check those numbers ?

Those above doesn't match my pulleys ! I try some measures on the belt i have now and (more or less) looks like this picture and i didn't find something that matches on dayco site.
Obviously help is wellcome !

The only 308 cam gears with 2 flanges/gear that I know of were those made by Ed Gault. Ed also supplied a tensioner as part of the cam gear set.

Could you please post a picture of one of your belt tensioners? Ed's tensioner was pretty unique.

It might be worth while to take an impression of your cam gear teeth & carefully cut a cross-section for comparison to the belt teeth. I'm speculating that the belt might have the same pitch as the gears, but not an exact tooth profile match.

 

My tensioners are different from those of Ed Gault picture, mine have the tensioning spring and looks like that shown on the workshop manual.

You could be right about profiles, here is the best i have been able to do drawing the pulley profile !

I had great support from Gates engeeneers.
They have been trying to help me but they told me that
the T201 tooth profile was designed by Gates and probably my
pulleys is a profile designed by another company and these different profiles are not compatible.
I am really tired and i will probably throw away evrything and move
to standard ferrari factory belts and pulleys setup.

Bummer about not being able to match the belt up.

Ed used the stock tensioners, just the tensioner bearing was unique. It was rebuildable.

 

I think Ed setup was 9.25 pitch and i have an 8mm pitch.
May be yuo are right about installed timing belts not perfectly matching my pulley profile.
It seems that doesn't exist a timing belt identical to does i have installed.
May be they are stretched !!!
I think should exist an 8mm belt to match my pulleys and i am still waiting for some feedback.
It looks to me very strange that i am the ONLY ONE in the world haveing those pulleys !!!!

It may seem obvious but have you tried contacting previous owner(s) and/or mechanics to track down who installed this set up and what belts they used?

if you can get it shipped. if not I can get it and ship it over, just let me know. not sure what the shipping would cost but it's one way to get the belt.

 

Ed's system was based on a Honda belt at the time if I remember correctly; he had contacted me for some information with respect to tensioner bearings & I gave him the SKF part number that I use & he just machined a larger outer bearing race & press fit the SKF bearing into it. The belts that he used were longer in length than the OEM belts that are why he made the tensioner bearing race that large (see the pic below) I would recommend keeping Ed's set up & not go to the garbage OEM belt system. That tensioner bearing race is re usable also just like the ones we have been making for years, you just press the old SKF bearing out & press a new one in, the bearings cost approx $60.00 after the initial cost of the reusable races.

till now i have not been able identify previous owners that did the upgrade.
The setup looks very similar to Ed Gault but if i am not wrong it was 9.25 pitch mine is 8mm pitch.
I could try napa item BA 0260301 is it 8mm pitch - 96 cm long - 250/300 large ?
