308 GT4...Looking for one

Greetings,

Well, I was hoping that my first post would be to say that I bought a 308GT4, however, that deal fell through today.... Proablly a sign.
Anyway, I'm on the lookout for another 308GT4. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to look, or actually know of anyone who is wanting to move a nice, well documented/maintained 308 GT4? I've looked all over the internet, including FerrariAds, and I'm just not coming across much.
Any help would be appreciated!

There are 2 308 GT/4s - both on the East Coast. One is black with tan interior, the other at a dealership with boxer paint scheme (Rossa Corsa over black.)

There is one - possibly two - for sale in the Bay Area, CA. Check www.craigslist.org and select "SF Bay Area", then Cars & Trucks under the "For Sale" section, and type in "Ferrari" in the search box. Best of luck.

I'm in the Midwest, so I'll pretty much be looking anywhere in the mainland US I guess. I've seen the cars on traderonline. I obtained about 17 pics or so from that dealer in NY, but when I emailed him with a bunch of question I got nothing in return. (Another bad sign!!!) I have not followed up on the Black/Black one in Maine.

I followed up with Gullwing on that one, too. I sense that they do no inspections whatsoever, and offer real "project" cars -- essentially at your own risk. The 'boxer' paint red/black one looks worn, and started out at $23.5K 5 mos ago. Now its at $19K.

You'd probably be upside down on that one very quickly.

If you happen to stumble on a really nice looking deep red over black, low mileage, high ask price GT$ with factory package shelf (vs. rear seats) BEWARE. Lots of history that does not show up in any records. Engine fire, mismatched specs, missing parts, questionable repairs back in the day...and a seller who is upside down on his investment trying to recoup.

 

Is the deep red one in Boston area? I've seen that one. Looks great from the outside. Thanks for the heads up!

The Gullwing car makes me worried. ALOT of grime caked on the underside of the rear A-Arms, very dirty back there. Radiator appears to have been repiared along with some rust in concerning spots...

I wish i had a 308 gt4, the car looks fantastic and the interior is just right, it is about my era so it would sit well with me,.................... I bought a 328 gts which is great but i think i got the wrong car,
There is a guy round the corner from me who has an immaculate example, but i havent yet said hello in fear that i will not be able to stop myself from falling for his car and putting mine on the market, i have only had mine for 2 years which is hardly enough time is it?.

 

What's the experienced opinion of those with a right-hand drive (England) car in the left-hand (USA) drive world? 1) I've always like the European cars over the North American ones (broadly speaking) and 2) a right-hand drive always gets heads turning...however...for any 'real' driving I would imagine trying to pass someone would be maddening (like on a 2-lane coastal road). Maybe not. In the long run, would one rather have the 'odd' car or stick with the 'proper' vehicle for their particular country? I've never heard anyone comment on such a topic.

<edit>Conversly, the opinion of a left-hand drive in a right-hand drive world would be just as helpful

*Yes, I know, not all cars in Europe are right-hand drive. I have been an automotive enthusiast for a couple decades, with German cars being my preference.

 

Do a search for posts started by me, I was looking at a 308GT4 here in Colorado several months ago (last summer?). Anyway, it was decent.

00 Boxster S instead of a 328/308GT4

 

Canada has some easy import regulations, so there are a plethora of ex-Japanese cars being brought in, especially here in B.C. In fact TWO neighbors of mine own them; one has a Nissan Skyline and the other neighbor has a Toyota Supra. Both are RHD and both are manuals. The fellow with the Skyline just moved in so I have not spoken to him yet, but the woman with the Supra has lived here for years and she just bought this car last month. She loves it and driving it has been no problem. She says the things she needs to get used to is that it requires concentration in placing herself properly in the lane while driving along and to look to the LEFT to look in the rear-view mirror.

Two things - Thing #1 - I looked for about 6 months for a GT4 and in that time it seemed that cars came up serially. I rarely saw two cars for sale at the same time with the exception of a few cars that are perpetually for sale. Gullwing always has one or more for sale, there's one in Georgia or Atlanta that was eBay over and over with a racing filler cap and foam airfilters. Other than those they came up here and there. I would never have had a chance to choose between two cars and take the better one. That's an awful way to shop, because the ok one you pass up might be the best for a while. Conversely Murphy says the one for sale immediately after you buy will be better and cheaper. That's why I stopped looking right after I bought. I just don't want to know. The flip side is that I was only really really really serious about buying a car for two months before getting mine and found one I could live with. Yours will come.

Thing #2 - OK what is up with all of this GT4 praise?!?! The GT4 was the unloved stepchild of the Ferrari world just a year ago. It isn't even a real Ferrari, remember? It's a Bertone styled wedge, not sexy at all. Pinninfarina designs the good ones. Plus the back seats mean it's not even a real sports car. REMEMBER? Who are you people? Just a year ago it was like "Yeah, I had a GT4, but I had to move up to a XXX and get a real Ferrari." Remember warnings about how if the engine gives up just throw it away because the cost is more than the car is worth? Suddenly the GT4 is the ****?

You GT4 dudes formed a support group, got together, chanted "Ra! Ra! GT4! WE RULE!" and convinced yourselves that the GT4 is the ****. Now you have convinced some others! It's working!

I remember when the GT4 first came out and I have been going back and collecting and reading and re-reading everything I can find on that car. I have yet to find an article or review of the car that says it is anything less than an excellent driving car. Please, someone correct me if I am wrong, but in all these years it always has been reviewed as an excellent car. I was always pleased with the fact that it was a low cost Ferrari and even in the mid seventies when I was a teenager, the GT4 was the car I wanted because it was something that was possibly within grasp price-wise.

We know all the reasons why this car was not embraced by Ferrari enthusiasts but the bottom line is that I have never found a 'rational' reason why it was unloved.

If anyone has an article or review of the GT4 that is unfavorable, please let me know and post it. Maybe I am having selective memory because I am restoring one of these things right now

 

I can confirm your experience: I've never heard or read anything other than praise for the GT4's driving experience, most prefering it to the GTB/GTS.

My impression is it's only the guys who can't and don't drive their cars who slag the GT4 as a lesser Ferrari.

Same here, have always heard good things about the GT4, with the exception of its looks.

Now people have started warming up to its looks.

Not running, just needs some parts bolted back on, probably 20 minutes by an experienced Ferrari mechanic or wait until February/March when I'm done. Has very desirable CIS UPGRADE.
