Yes. The sheild was changed from blue to yellow to reflect the town color of Modena. I am a bit bias, but I love the yellow. Look how it stands out with others.

My god... I've never seen a 355 and 360 together from such a perspective: How freaking portly does the 360 look?

I think you have gotten to used to looking at your 1/18th cars. The real ones are bigger.

I have been told Ferrari actually made the 360 wider than originally planned in order to get the aerodynamics underneath correct. The airflow for the venturis needed the suspension out of the way.

 

I've been told the 512 TR had to be wide for cooling reasons: Some people will say anything.

 

Well the people that gave me that information used to work for Ferrari (Rifledriver) and I believe him as he not only a Ferrari trained technician, but also an owner of a 1/1 Ferrari.

 

I have got no quarrel with Rifledriver, and have no idea what he's told you.

There are a number of reasons the TR is so wide, moving the rads allowed a reasonable trunk, increasing rear track was quicker and easier than redesigning the trans to lower CG, customer demographic wanted more elbow room... To declare width is a cooling parameter is a tad tightly focused.

A 575 is almost as wide as TR, the 599 within an inch, no side mounted rear radiators. The 575 is more than half a foot wider than a Daytona, cooling?

All of which is irrelevant to my point that the pic you posted clearly highlights the "generous" proportions of the 360 when directly compared to the 355, and how that is, to me, a disturbing trend across the model range.

I hold the same opinon regarding BMW's, which I have owned, as if that makes any difference.

 

..as mentioned above it's historical significnace is a racing color for Belgium, and it's many famous drivers...

It's still a fun color.....

 

We are off topic here, but there are only two ways to reduce weight transfer and improve traction: lower the center of gravity or increase distance between the contact patches (longer wheelbase, wider track). Within reason (and all things being equal) wider track = better handling. As much as I love my 355, the 360's aluminum chassis is 400 pounds lighter despite its larger dimensions.

That being said, when I am passing some Yahoo in a pickup on a backroad, I prefer the narrow car

I do like the yellow ones, for no other reason than they are beautiful! (But the best is rossa corsa with the yellow shields!)

 

I had the same reaction. The black 355 looks positively svelte, and I think a yellow one would, too. (In fact yellow is a great color on 355s.)

I think part of the reason is that people are getting fatter and taller, and not all that many prospective Ferrari buyers want to slip into a Boxer or a 308 anymore. I agree, though, cars are too damn big. But it's not just Ferrari.

The Jag XK (new and outgoing versions) are an example. It's a two-seat car, and yet the old E-Type is also a two-seater and looks a hell of a lot better -- but you would never see the E-Type behind the new whaled-up version.

BMW's 6 series is close to 4000 lbs, and it carries two adults. IMO, it's simply a bloatmobile. I suppose you can add enough computer-guided traction, handling, braking and horsepower to compensate, but then the whole Ultimate Self-Driving Machine concept starts to get stale. And no matter how many horsies you cram underhood, it looks ponderous and ungainly.

On the positive side, Porsche seems to have shortened the 997 from the 996 - and it looks much better. And Chevy chopped some inches off the new Corvette, which I think looks spades better than the C5.

 

yet the 360 is actually lighter than the 355!! Performs a lot better also.

Radiator location does not affect TR width. Engine width and suspension design does.

The 360 is 70 kilo lighter than 355 and 40% more rigid. The down force generated by having the extra width is 180 kilo's at 280 KPH as opposed to slight lift on the 355 at the same speed. The width was required to get larger more effective tunnels under the car between the wheels and transmission. The car went to a longitudinal transmission so that the tunnels could be made deeper. Also the suspension arms were shortened from what was considered ideal to give that space to the tunnels. It is 3 seconds faster around Fiorano than 355.

360 was the subject of an SAE paper discussing its aerodynamic superiority to any other road car produced prior to 1999.

The car was also made longer and taller in direct response to customer complaints that there was not enough interior room for tall drivers.

Ferrari is responding to the wants and needs of the people that actually buy the cars as opposed to the criticisims of internet warriors in chat rooms that collect models.

This has gotten silly and needlessly vituperative: All I did was note the distinction in appearance between the 355/360, and then try to correct some illogical misconceptions, and then, look, a second "cultural revolution"...

All in the track & wheel differences, unless the 4valve heads add several feet to the engine width.

The track of the 360 is but 2mm greater than the 355, I looked it up, same wheel width therefore wheel-to-wheel inner edge width is only 2mm greater. Room for the tunnels was acquired by going to the long. trans., not widening the car (and 22mm at that).
