Check with an Apple store in your area. Sometimes they might swap it out without a receipt, I've had a couple issues with a wireless mighty mouse that I got for gift on my birthday & had it replaced no questions asked. They were pretty good about warranting their products. My current 1st gen 4 gb Nano is having battery issues & I’m going over there to have it checked out.

When you plug it into the USB, does the computer detect the ipod? In some cases, doesn't happen often, but the usb/memory card readers will sometimes not detect what ever is plugged in. Try updating the software if thats applicable.

Just an off chance, but are you charging the ipod directly from a USB port or are you using a hub? If you're using a hub, that could be the source of the problem.

I got a Nano as a gift about a year ago. I loaded tunes into it, it worked for a day and then had all the same symptons yours had. It wouldn't charge, computer wouldn't recognize it. I made an appointment with the Apple Store and after waiting an hour past my scheduled time, while other people were asking questions that had no appointment, I left and through it it the trash. Sorry for the rant, I just hate anything with an Apple on it.

Try toggling the hold switch on and off a couple times. If that doesnt work, go to the apple store.

Turn hold on and off, then hold down the center butter and "menu" for roughly 6 seconds. That totally resets the iPod, and it has always worked for me.

The new Nanos came out less than a year ago, and they come with a 1-year warranty. Just go to the store and say you lost the receipt, but are obviously still within the warranty period.

EDIT: However, try ItaliaF1's suggestion first.

I agree with this. Make sure it is charged and/or plugged in and you may need to hold the buttons in for up to 15 seconds. You may also have to toggle the hold switch 2 or more times. The exact procedure is listed under the 'help' section online or in the manual.

I agree with you 1000000000000% I recieved a 30gb iPod video for X-Mas and every now and then it just freezes up. I took it to the closest Apple store yesterday and was told I had to make an appointment for the "Genius Bar" What!? Of course, the next appointment was an hour away but I didn't want to wait so the Apple rep suggested I call another store and make an appointment, she gave me a card with a number on it so while I was driving I called the next store only to be told I can't make an appointment over the phone! I made the drive anyways, hoping the wait would be shorter and of course the wait was longer...just three hours :(
It's really unfortunate, I was hoping to purchase an iMac for my home-based business but this Apple marketing crap they use in their stores has steered me away from ever doing business with them.

Take it into an apple store at worst they'll charge you 25 bucks to fix it.

My wife's mini fried on the factory charger, and Apple replaced it thru the mail with no hassle at all.
