I am looking to purchase a 360 6 speed, and have been unable to get much information on year to year differences.

I understand that are some significant changes in the emission systems, and some earlier cars have some cam variator issues. Does anyone have a link or resource to figure out which year is best to buy and what changes occurred throughout the years?
    thanks

    Hi ken,

if you search through some of my postings, I detail the whole thing as I recall. Basically 2001 and later is where they started to clear up issues.

I believe the VIN no.'s of the cars with potential vairator problems were posted a while back along with the stipulations for factory partisapation. Early 360's were not bad cars and many of the upgrades found on the later cars such as ECU and TCU updates can be implemented. Buy the newest car your budget will allow.

The search is still on. The TdF blue looks awesome, but I was hoping for the ti/blk combo. I like the year and miles, and it seems like the car has been nicely cared for.

Ray, I tried to search through your posts via your profile, and it only shows me 100 posts (which for you is like three days :) ) , so I couldn't find a list.

For some reason, there are a ton of 2000's for sale, and it sounds like that is the worst year to buy. What is your best guess for a good price for the one in north carolina? Given the deal you got on your car, maybe I can have you negotiate for me.

Why would a 2000 be the worst year to buy ... because there are more for sale? Maybe there are more of them? If it's because of cam variators, that's a recall item and all 2000's are probably updated. I believe all the cars are practically the same with the main difference being the 1999 not having pre-cats.

I'll say a 2005 would be the worst year to buy ... why? Because you'll take the biggest hit when it comes time to sell in a couple of years.

From what little information I have gleaned, 2000's have 2 precats and are before 2001, where they have started fixing lots of issues (see above). I certainly am not opposed to purchasing a 2000, especially if it has been taken care of.

    Ray,
Thanks for the link re:years and issues. You love your car too much for me to buy it. I am not prepared to make an indecent proposal. Anyway, I have more patience than money right now. :)

I would own any year. It is true the early cars had more problems but most were rectified. The 99's do not have air injection or precats so make more power. The one fault that was not taken care of on the early cars was the motor mount area on the frame. Those got reinforced later but repairs if they break are not that big a deal.

Here is a picture of one.

FWIW, my '02F1 was flawless. Over 18K miles with no issues! In fact, although I love my F430, I miss my 360!

Do they just TIG weld it while it's in the car (or MIG?)

Depending on skill level either can be done. Even I can MIG weld.

Just remove the motor mounts and brackets, strip the paint, fab some reinforcing plates and weld everything up.

Is that part steel or aluminum? I've played around with MIG welding aluminum, but it's difficult to get the bead to end up where you want it :) I was thinking I might fiddle around with doing like a little spot on/off approach one of these days and see if it makes a difference. Not sure if my argon tank is empty though.

Yeah, I mig weld stuff all the time. My flux capacitor has been on the blink though. I was thinkin' of using an argon beam coagultor for the routine stuff. Or duct tape.

It's aluminum and it is one of the castings. I think that part was redesigned in late 99 or 2000. But like I said, it is not a big fix.

Like Brian says the early cars are great with a few simple fixes. With that said it would seem to me 99's are the best year. No air injection, no precats, more power and more sound. They are also priced the lowest because of the year.
