a) straight line (standstill): 550 or 430? b) straight line (rolling start): 550 or 430? c) Track: 550 or 430? Assume that all cars are basic (no handling packages or upgraded brakes). Thanks
Seriously? I would recommend a YouTube.com search. You should come accross pleanty of good "racing" footage. My money is on the F430. -Marc
Why would ANYONE want to know something like this? They are completely different cars, seperated by Engine Size, Position, Purpose.... not to mention 10 years of development ? Same question in reverse- Which is faster - 355 or 599 ? Ridiculous question !!! Argento
OK, if you have 2- 200 pound males in each and you just put it in neutral, which one would roll down a 30% grade faster? I bet the 550 would win hands down in that category!
My take on this is 430 will probably launch better from 0 - 100 km/hr but from 100 km to top speed I would say 550 will haul as* with the 12 cyln engine and torque
According to German Auto Motor und Sport magazine's tests... the difference from 0-200km/h (125mph) is 0,4 seconds faster for the F430. A very small advantage... More hp (95) but less weight and drag.
thanks guys for your input i believe that the 550 will become a ferrari classic, hence, i'm in the final negotiations in getting a red/tan MY2000 with 15,000 miles. the V12 + looks + mechanical design = one great ferrari to collect
Never owned either, but posts in this forum make the 550 sound like a serious "torquerer" so wouldn't it be better off the line than the high rev'ing 430?
People also seem to conclude that it is a pig around corners. Not true. The torque is mind boggling. The tires will spin in 2nd nowhere close to floored-- just with steady accelleration. It's really amazing. No matter what gear you are in it will pull. Very impressive-- it feels like there is more power on hand than the Turbo. Normal people don't ever need any more power than this car. But we're still doing a nice exhaust set-up (look for a Fabspeed prototype thread soon). Cornering, turn in is top notch, agility is VERY present, and overall feel is 100% second to none. The car is actually much smaller than people tend to remember as the HUGE hood is ingrained in their minds. I'm not saying the car will out handle a 430, but it certainly will hold its own with the best. Granted, it's an old video, but look at Top Gear's "Best Handling Cars in the World." You'll be quite surprised. -Joe
The 550's incresed weight and the fact that it is hard to get all that power to stick is a problem for launching it and subsequently hurts the 0-60 times. The 1/4 mile will be a closer gap between the two but from 100 mph on, the 550 walks away from it. High end speed requires a good aerodynamics and alot of horsepower.
this got me curious so I looked it up on ************* I was surprised these two cars were so close: According to *************: 550 top speed 199MPH 1/4 mile 12.6 sec 430 top speed 198MPH 1/4 mile 11.9 sec
I had a 550 for over 3 years and put 25,000kms on it mostly very high speed driving in China. I drove with every model of F car. My car was heavily modified. Stock car to stock car the 430 is faster in every respect as you would expect for a car that is one generation newer. The 550 has to be modified to reach it's potential - 19" wheels, Fiorano handling package, big brakes, lowered, exhaust, air filters, ECU, sports seats (to save weight), ASR remapped to come on later... It can then run with a 430 but not on the track. I have a 599 now and also own a CGT and a 997 GT3 RS. There is no way that a 550 can hold its own with the "best". It is a vintage car in comparison. Turn in is not top notch, it is rather lame. High speed sweepers provided ASR remedied is quite ok but not top notch. "Agility"??? Compared with a 360CS 550 is a lumbering tank. I loved the car which is why I kept it for so long but be realistic. A great looking car that is very dated in performance Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I hope that your view of classic does not include investment potential. The 550 is a mass produced car. I think the 550 will always be appreciated as the spiritual successor to the Daytona
Thanks. I'm talking about on road driving and making the point that the car is the pig everyone thinks it is. On the track, every little bit matters. Not so much on the road. The deviation can be greater and the results not so much. There is NO way a well driven 550 will be completely embarassed by most sports cars on a given backroad or highway for that matter. Yes, there are (obviously) cars that will take one easily in one or both venues. But It's up there with the rest.
How narrow minded!!! Aren't people allowed to like two cars that represent different driving styles and then request information that might help them decide which one they prefer???
I'm also talking about on the road. But on a fast road. I can tell you first hand that the 550 will be completely embarassed by newer generation F cars. Don't throw in "well driven". I am assuming that all are well driven. For parade duty or boulevard patrol it doesn't matter. But as soon as the ASR kicks in the 550 is dead. The 550 is so far removed from my mind as track candidate that it never even occured to me. It might have been interesting to track a 550 in 1996 but since then hardly a weapon of choice
I'm done arguing with you. Put your E-sword away and stop flexing your E-muscles, Captain Superdriver. The 550 is far better than you're making it out to be, and there are many others who agree with me. -Joe
