Yea dads poor old Chrysler, We blew up several batteries. It had the air cleaner snorkel pointed right at the battery. I starting it once, it backfired and blew the top off a battery, that may have even happened to dad once too.

That was almost as hard to explain as when I blew up the muffler trying to backfire the car going down Oakland Ave.

And my kids wonder why they can't drive my old cars.............

Let me know when you'll be at the Nut Tree A/P next and I'll come up to meet you. Maybe I'll bring Brian along.

I have been told that part of the road is bad there, so I'll driver "TENDERly"!!!

Planning on being there last 2 weeks of March or so. Have to pull the engine to work on the starter clutches. Americans--starter clutches slipping, remove starter and re torque clutch pak. Britts--starter clutches slipping, remove engine and re torque clutch pak, re install engine and prop. What kind of engineering is that? I'm getting too old for this c*ap. Bring Crall, I could sure use both of you for a few hours. Uh know fork lift, cables etc. Be fun. Do lunch. I'l keep you posted.

Is the aircraft, 1710 cubic inch Allison V12 the same as the marine engine?

I would get rid of my twin Fords for one of those!

    Sparky,

From the sound of things it may be both Cralls.

I don't think I can take that and I only know one of them!

Confirm the date and I'll be there. I can't speak for the Crall's.

You should have bought an A36 instead!

Neewd we be "tender" with the engine removal?

Hi Doug. No. Allison aircraft eng 1710 cubes rated at 1200 hp weighs 1300 lbs. Allison did not make marine eng as far as I know. Packard made a 2450 cube eng for the PT boats that was rated at 1500hp and was 4000lbs. Packard aircraft eng 1650 cubes rated at 1600hp and weighs 1600 lbs. The Allisons are around but getting up around 25k per copy. Packard Merlin cores arg fetching 40-50k. GREG----you betcha, TENDER is the watchword removing and putting back. Pix. Packard 1650, Packard Marine, Allison 1710 and Packard 1650.

No to diesels. Some of the the post war X and crash boats were fitted with humungo GM diesels. As far as I know neither the Elco or Higgins were fitted with anything but av gas units. I'l send you a book.

Bill Harraha's boat in Lake Tahoe has Allisons, a 55 foot Hacker Craft which originally had two 550 HP Kermath engines, Harrah bought it from the original owner and during renovation put a pair of 1200 HP Allisons in her.
I have been on it, its pretty neat boat, and runs well at Tahoe altitude.

I believe they used them in PT boats as well

Greasy Jack Cochran built up two aircraft Allison 1710-111's using PT tranny v-drives for the Thunderbird a long time ago. I have only seen it uncowled once at the marina at Tahoe city circa 1987. He was doing some maint work on them at that time. Jack and his then partner, Jack Hovey were in the merlin o'haul business. Split the sheets in the early 70's and each went on their merry ways.Cochran has sence punched out and Hovey has his ohaul shop at Eagles Nest airport at Ione. Get to see and hear the Tbird every summer at Tahoe. Can hear those throbbing Allisons a long way off. Pix about 2003 heading up the lake abeam Meeks Bay. Joan Gibbs 55ft Hacker and my little 20 ft Hacker.
