Last time I was in the city I tried Smith and Wolensky's steak house and boy did it suck!

Dylan Prime in Tribeca was pretty good though.

    Luger's makes an awesome Porterhouse...

Try BLT Steak on 57th for a great Filet Mignon and the best onion rings you'll ever have...

Lugar's is my fav, hands down. Dylan Prime is also really good (also thanks to Emil for introducing me). Smith & Wollensky is close too -- good cuts -- probably the second best to Lugar as far as outright quality of meat. Sparks is OK, nothing impressive. Strip House has cool ambiance and good meat, but average compared to the group. Del Frisco's is also good, but I was on a bad date there so it lost points ;) Rothmann's was very tasty -- on par with S&W...

Really, they're all considered "very good" in my book, compared to the schwag that 90% of places serve. Lugar's is just so over-the-top awesome that you can't compare...

Damn, looking back, I've been to a lot of steakhouses in the city! :)

i'm an absolute addict of the Capital Grille. Luger's is good, but if i'm spending 80 bucks to eat a steak i want to decide the cut and how it's prepared. Plus, Cap Grille has a 5,000 bottle wine list and sides i drool over.

Palm's not bad... their desserts are huge. I still favor Luger's though. there are a bunch of relative newcomers that were started by ex-waiters and such from Lugers. Wolfgang's (by park/30ish) was started by an ex Luger alum, as was Mark Joseph. Wolfgang's, IMO was not quite as good as Luger's, but I felt it was better than the run of the mill chains like S&W, Mortons, Capital Grille, etc. I have heard MJ is really good, but I haven't been there yet.

I think it's actually very good... Not the best, but very good. And the somelier is *HOT*. (Seriously, she can't be more than mid-twenties and she's very cute... AND she's a somelier!)

Try "Flames" on Gold St. Steaks can be better than Lugers (yes, I am a Lugers guy), monster lobsters, serious wine list. Owner's name is Nick. Use my name. His other place is in Briarcliff Ny. It is not as atmospheric as Lugers, but on steak quality, you will be impressed. I also agree that Wolfgang's is not as good as Lugers, that the Palm is ho-hum (used to go there long before it become a franchise), that Smith & W. is borderline horrible, and that Sparks at least 10 years ago- probably had one of the best, and most reasonably priced California wine lists in NYC. I have not tried the latest wave of fashionable steak houses, and would group the chains, like Mortons and Ruth Chris, a big notch below Luger level.

Dad introduced me to Tad's oh sooo many years ago. The ambiance has got to be experienced. :)

Looks to me like we have the making for another tri-state night out to break the winter doldrums.

I think Lugers is a little overrated. Its still an awesome place, dont get me wrong. I really like River Palm and BLT Prime. Sparks is also good but as one other post mentioned, it seems their steaks have been going downhill.
