In about an hour, I am getting my upper and lower wisdom teeth on my left side pulled. I have been getting some pretty severe pain from the lower left one ever since I had a cavity filled in. Every time I eat, temperature and pressure really affect it. Tried a few things to correct it, none of them worked, so this is the last resort. I am just looking forward to eating without pain again. I lived with the pain for about 3 months now.

Luckily, my wisdom teeth are exposed, so I understand it is much less of an ordeal versus when they are still under the gums. I opted for a local rather than going to sleep...........that way, recovery time is much faster. I have to be back at work tomorrow - how effective I will be has yet to be seen!

How many of you still have your wisdom teeth? For those who have had them pulled - how was the experience? How long was the recovery? Did you go with a local, or were you put to sleep?

I had mine pulled before they were exposed. I opted to go completely under and had a relatively easy recovery. My mouth swelled up, but I didn't experience any pain after the surgery and was feeling fine the next day.

I had my 2 lower impacted teeth taken out December 1st, 2006. I was put under for the surgery since they were impacted. Initially I thought everything had gone incredibly well. I was given all types of medication for swelling, pain and to fight off infection. I had very little pain after the surgery for about 10 days. Then I got dry socket. Again the pain wasn't brutal but it was uncomfortable. They packed my mouth up to get rid of the dry socket. After I got rid of the packs I was still sore and swelling on one of the sides of mouth was still present. My oral surgeon then put me on an anti biotic to fight off infection. That helped a little but the swelling still persisted. So he put me on another stronger anti biotic but still some swelling continued. Finanlly he decided he should open up the swollen side of my mouth to see if some bone fragments got into my jaw when the extraction took place. So 16 days ago they opened my jaw up and sure enough I had bone fragments in my jaw and my body was trying to fight them off as being infections. The bad thing about this was I had to have stiches again and I swelled up again. It was like getting the procedure done twice. Luckily this second surgery seemed to do the trick. I saw my oral surgeon on Monday and he said everything looked great and the healing appears to be going well. I am back to eating almost every type of food.

My story is rare but it does happen. If your teeth aren't impacted you will most likely not have any of the problems I have had. I had my 2 upper wisdom teeth removed years ago and they were not impacted. That was very basic and I had absolutely no swelling.

It has been an ordeal but I think I came up with a new radical diet :) (I lost nearly 10 pounds since December 1st since I would not eat at times because of the pain I had)

I am sure you will be fine. Good luck.

had mine taken out a few weeks ago..overall it wasnt too bad. I only had 2 and half of em(one was really small and one just didnt come in). Worst part about mine was the not being able to eat normal food for about a week. I had swelling but you really couldnt tell from looking at me. It did take a good week and half to two weeks to completely get over. No way would i have stayed awake during the surgery though.

I stayed awake during mine and was fine with being awake. Recovery wasn't too bad. Good luck although I'm sure the dentist won't want you back at work tomorrow.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out at once a few years back. They put me under with some twilight IV so I only vaguely remember about 5 seconds of the operation... that twilight IV was some good stuff... Anyways, the bleeding stopped after a few hours for me... but I wasn't able to eat anything solid for close to a week, and I believe I only really got pain medication to last like 48 hours. Anyways, I ended up getting lots of milkshakes during that time, which I had to usually eat with a spoon. Anyways, they had me take care of the sockets by using a syringe and shooting warm salt water into all four of them twice a day, which was a pain in the ***. But anyways, the procedures must be different for adults vs teens, because my girlfriend at the time couldn't remember anything for 3 days after her surgery, but three months later got a paper back that she received an a on that she didn't remember writing.

Same here. Got mine done at 19, maybe 20 years old. Went completely under. Was a non-event. All I remember is counting backwards from ten...I think I got to six...and then waking up and thinking "damnit, the anethesia wore off and they haven't even started." No pain whatsoever, minimal swelling, was up and around the next day.

I here awful stories all the time and I really feel for people that have miserable experiences. :-(

I was supposed to count down as well, but I looked up at the nurse who gave me the sleepy juice and told her that they should sell the stuff. I was out right after that.

I have 4 wisdom teeth growing IN FRONT of my jaw.

Does anyone know a dentist that can fix my bite?

As you can see, I'm in constant agony.

I had a side out two years ago, I was wide awake. The worst part was the feeling and sound of the teeth/roots snapping - it echoes through your head. The wirey little surgeon had the tooth in vise grips and was rowing the grips back and forth with both hands for a good while (yanking my head in various directions) before they would rip out and fill my mouth with blood.

We ended up with a group of friends and they ordered pizza... I couldn't resist and just chewed on the other side.

A few weeks and even months later, I was having shards of tooth and bone push through my gums. That hurt.

Probably a little late now, but I imagine they used nitrous oxide " laughing gas" since there is no mention of not eating... therefore no IV sedation...most of the time, if using deep sedation we usually remove all 4 at the same time. Post op....do what your doctor recommends. Keep area clean, take medications as directed and to prevent dry socket, no straws or cigarettes. These can pull the clot out interrupting healing and causing an infection.

Any disadvantage to going IV sedation(it's what I did), other than cost? I guess I'm surprised at how many people don't do IV.

If the teeth are erputed it is fairly simple and can be completed usually with nitrous. If the teeth are impacted and bone needs to be removed, it is more comfortable to use IV sedation. Some people really need sedation and some do not. I personally highly recommend it... there is no reason not be comfortable for the procedure.

LOL... it hurt a bit but wasn't terrible. A few weeks after my teeth were out and the holes healed I started feeling pain and swelling in the area. Started stinging when I ate. Sure enough, I started to feel a sharp point in my gums as the shards broke through the surface - over the next month or so I pulled out maybe 3 slivers of tooth or bone that had worked their way out.

I can empathize with those with bad experiences., having all four of my wisdom teeth removed took a total of 3 trips, spread out over the course of a year.

My top two came out easily, but it took about a week for the pain and swelling to subside. My bottom left tooth took two hours alone, and having no time left in his schedule, the dentist opted to do the right tooth down the road. In both cases, I needed a solid week to recover. I played a pickup game of basketball and the impact from running around the court actually cost me a good five days of recovery time.

And I wasn't under for any of these--just some novocaine. I'll tell you, nothing beats the echo through your head when someone is breaking your teeth into shards with a pliers...

I wish I was one of the lucy few who had no adverse reaction to the surgery. A friend of mine had all four of hers removed and went to work waitressing later that day, no problems.

I had 4 impacted and went the 'knock u out' route for the surgury... Needless to say surgury went great but i was only supposed to be out for the 2 hour period and they had trouble bringin me back awake. My mom was there as said i came back and was mid sentance walking to the waiting room and fell asleep... Did this for close to 6 hours... I also threw up a couple of times when i would wake up... They pretty much forsured dry sock due to the vomitting, however i didn't get it.. I was literally fine the next day, never took the vicodin, and stopped the other med early because it made me sick and two days later i was back to eatin regular food...I had it done on a monday, i went to college the following monday...

    Most embarrassing part:
I ate some cashews 4ish days after surgury and of course they got stuck in the holes... I went to the doctor to get them fished out and it took longer than expected and ran into a lunch date with my then g/f... My phone rings, my mom answers it, upon my ex askin where i am my mom said "O sweetie, Mikchael is fine, the doctor is still tryin to get some nuts out of his mouth, i guess he must really like nuts..." Needless to say i was pissed

    Thats a lesson.. don't eat PLANTER's nuts/cashews..

I had two dry sockets at the same time and the pain was unbelieveble. I went back to the dentist after two weeks on pain killers and he told me he thought I was a drug addict. After a quick exam he appologized, and gave me more pain pills. It took about four weeks to get over it.

The moral of theses stories is see an oral surgeon....not a general dentist.
