Relocating to Texas, Dallas TX

How am I being a snob?? I'm just stating my opinion.

 

I'm sure we can help you find some back roads to play on, the north Texas group will be than happy to help out, btw what part of the area are you considering to live in? (Plano, Downtown, Southlake, Garland, Farmers Branch, Addison, Keller, Cedar Hill, Grapevine, Rivercrest, Westover Hills, etc.)

 

Just to clarify Rob, the roads in the Ozarks may very well be better, but the roads in those videos don't look anything better than what we have here to me. I know that there are better roads out there...

I would think Cali has some great roads.

That sounds good, whatever you decide I'm sure you will got a lot of helpful input, please left me know what I can do for you. The building boom is still going strong here so I don't you will have problem as far as selection, but I guess you will factor in where you're going to work as well, some long commutes are not fun depending on where you driving from. Most of us are spread out all over the DFW metroplex, but a large amount seem to call various areas of North Dallas home.

 

I love that part of 360, always a fun part to drive on.

 

this afternoon i made the central -> 35E -> 635 -> central loop. about as exciting as i've found so far stopped by lamborghini of dallas but they closed at 2pm

 

There are decent (not great) roads near the metroplex, but figure on driving pretty much an hour outside in any direction before finding a road that's curvy and low in traffic. Most of the good roads internal to the Metromess have had subdivisions built all up and down them and are crowded with SUVs. In the past 5 years, my good driving loop near my house has been completely destroyed by newcomers and McMansions.

 

FM 51 - Granbury to Chalk Mountain - 24 miles - "Good two lane road, paved well. ...a fun road..."

Yep, fabulous fun. Was part of the 2006 fall run

FM 455 - Montague to Westminister - 94 miles - "Great sweeping turns and twisties."

Part of this goes through the Metroplex. Was a good road, but the drought has caused serious surface problems. Still fun to drive, but keep your speed down or you'll be buying new spoilers and underbody panels.

FM 677 - Saint Jo to Illinois Bend - 18 miles - "Absolutely stunning scenery with nice turns."

Fun road, was part of the 2004 fall run

US 377 - Lake Texoma to Denton - 54 miles - "Very nice road to cruise on."

Ok, little too much traffic. Part of 2006 Toy Run

FM 2953 - Spanish Fort to Illinois Bend - 9 miles - "Beautiful ride with views of the Red River."

Not really worth running out that far just for this road, but it does intersect with FM 677 at Illinois Bend.

 

I hope I am not repeating on somebody elses road choices here, but FWTW -

The road up to and through Okla Lake Murray out a little east of Marietta, Okla. is worth doing - about an hour and half north of Dallas.

If you continue north, there is also a short stretch of curving scenery road on the way up I35 just on up North of Ardmore. It goes through the Arbuckle mountains, you have to get off the interstate and hunt it out, like Lake Murray.

Another really good one goes N of Vian, Okla. & up through Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Another favorite of mine is the Wilhelmena Drive through Arkansas/Oklahoma. This is a good way up or back to the Hot Springs Ark. area (which also has a lot of good lower-speed curvy roads).

If I were you, I would figure out where I was going to work, and then pick a housing area which would minimize the frustration in the commute. The new George Bush from Las Colinas is pretty good right now, at least until you get a little east of Carrolton...
