try to get a room near the Cresent st or Snt Catherin Av. if you want to have fun at nights. I usually stay at the Sheraton Four Points (downtown) for $1200 us. dlls. for 4 nights but you can't book it now.

The other thing is this is Indy's last year, which pisses me off. I would deffinately go to Indy this year then Montreal for years to come.

2006 was the last year. 2007 was an add to T. George's contract. 2008 is certainly undecided.

What are you talking about, Bernie? There are no strip clubs in Montreal. Not even in downtown Montreal. Please stop!

(Shhh! There are married men in the room!)

BE AWARE the travel laws to Canada from the USA changed 2 weeks ago on about 1/24/07.
If you FLY to and from, you MUST have a passport, if you drive or take a train you do not.

To get a passport you need an official copy of your birth certificate (the one with the raised dimple seal), and two pieces of ID, and two pictures.

I know this because a company wanted to send me to Toronto last week, and I researched it.

I suggest that you walk in the paper work to the nearest Federal Building that give out passports with the cash. If they know that you are leaving in a day or so and have your tickets, you may be able to get it either the same day or the next. It all depends on your departure day. When I lived in LA, I saw passports issued in a couple of hours because the people had tickets in their hands for evening flights. Remember, you catch more flyes with honey then your do without.

    My 2 cents:

Stands 15 and 24 are the best: great view of the hairpin (and whatever passing happens there) and a shorter walk to the Metro station than most of the others.

I always stayed on the south shore, in Greenfield Park or Brossard. Some fairly affordable lodgings there. From some you can get to the Longueuil Metro station by bus; otherwise there is plenty of parking (with a fee) at the Metro station. From there the islands (and the track) are the first stop.

A must on Saturday after the action: take the Metro to the Guy-Concordia station and walk the few blocks to Crescent Street: lots of neat eateries (most with open-air dining) and plenty of people-watching and car-watching.

Don't forget about St. Laurent street, that is where the true action is.

Many of you who have been to Montreal may not have heard about the nightlife and action there, its not a "tourist" zone, so not many know about it.

If you think Crescent street is great, check out St. Laurent, its hard to count how many bars, restaurants and clubs are on that street!

    Bernie, tell them more please..........

St. Laurent near Sherbrooke (downtown) is the area to go if you "want to be seen". Lot's of high-end restaurants....but IMO, the food is ridiculously overpriced....and nothing to write home about.

Little Italy (on St. Laurent near St. Zotique) would be my area of choice. More parking for the exotics, lots of cafés, restaurants for every budget, not as hectic...but still very vibrant.

Has anyone done one of the F1 tour packages to Canada? There seem to be at least 2 or 3 different companies offering packages...

OK, my plans are all together, so I wanted to update what we did. Everything more expensive than I expected, but it will be a great trip for something we don't do every year.

We fly in Thursday, fly out Monday.

Staying at Sandman. http://www.sandmanhotels.com/hotels/quebec/montreal.php They just had a group cancel, so there are a few rooms available for about $320 a night. Looks like a really nice hotel.

Got tickets where most here recommended: GS 11 Sec 4 Row E Seats 3-6.

This is a couples trip, Jennie and I going with FC user Jimpo1 and his wife. Ahh, no strip clubs this trip. :)

We may have 2 Friday and Saturday tickets for sale next to Jim and I if the ladies want to stay off track. Let me know if interested.

Maybe if we buy our wives some tequila shots first? ;)

We have at least 1 ticket for Friday and Saturday, so we should assume that we'll have 2.

We'll be depending on you locals to give us the pointers.

Should we rent a car? We can use it to get around Thurs-Mon, and park it if we don't need it. Cost won't be much as I have some rental vouchers I can use, but is it worth it? If no car, what's the best way to get to the hotel? Cab? Subway?

Does anyone have the number of a good bail bondsman? I AM traveling with Rob. :D

I don't live there but I have been many, many times. DO NOT RENT A CAR! Taxis or subway is the way to get around (or you can walk). It's a beautiful city and the women are beautiful and sexy (why bring wives??).

Way to go, Rob. I'm jealous. We used to do Thursday to Monday as well. Thursday afternoon we went straight to Crescent Street and got a spot upstairs on the balcony at Winnie's, at lunch and drank and watched the growing crowd below. I highly recommend it.

You definitely don't need a car, walk or use the metro instead. There is a bus tour that takes you around town for little $$ and you can get on/off at will (although it does take a while until the next one comes). That's a cheap and comfortable way to get a good overview and check out all the touristy stuff without a hassle.

Personally I got a kick out of the Olympic area, particularly the "biosphere" which is a very lovely walk through kinda zoo. Of course the most interesting area is the old town near the harbor and the best party time is in the blocked off area. Make sure you stop by at Villeneuve's NEWTOWN restaurant, if nothing else for at least a drink at the bar. It's where the action is.

You will notice the difference between a GP in the US and the rest of the world: The Canadians (just like the Europeans) love their GP and are proud of it. It is covered on TV endlessly and the whole city has a GP atmosphere about it. Very different from the USGP, which gets a 10 second soundbyte in the evening news. I remember flying back on Monday as well and while waiting in a bar at the airport the TV was still showing replays of the race with the commentators going back and forth. Not unlike the Racing section here. :)
