I have a US version 246GTS (1974) which has open headlights. The covered headlights of the Euros are so much better looking. Does anyone know of a source of original or aftermarket covers that can be fitted to US cars?

superformance used to have them. every time i have seen them for sale, they have to be trimmed to fit the car. the hardware required to mount them was the topic of a thread long ago.

Just to be sure, headlight covers were never a factory option...Euro or U.S. They were added by dealers or owners. I have never seen them in the parts book. The few that I have seen with covers acquired them from the dealer or fabricator (paint or body shop).

This topic has been covered in lots of threads. Do a search on "dino headlight covers" and you'll get lots of insight.

The headlight covers seem to have been an adaptation of those made by Carello for the Alfa Spider.

BTW - I have never seen the alternator fuse box in the parts book, but it exists and is correct.

It's listed on the website but it's not in the parts book, at least not mine. So, I guess you're both a little correct on this.

And not to complicate things, but this is on the website too..

Uncle. I concede. My bad. I was surprised that the fuse box was not in the book, but did find it on line. Of course, I neglected to look for the plexi headlamp covers on line.

At the same time, the only references I can find to these headlight covers is as an aftermarket addition, not a factory option.

I've looked through the articles I have, and all the stinkin' books, I don't see that they were offered by the factory.

Interestingly though, I've never been to a concours where there was a deduction made for their presence on a car, which there should be if they were not available from the factory.

I'm gonna toss this around with a couple of concours judges, see what they say.

I replied to one of those past threads, but in case you don't wade through them all I'll repeat the essence of the post. I was at Concorso Italiano some years back when Pininfarina was in attendance. While getting his autograph I explained that I had a 246GTS Dino. He smiled braodly. Then I asked him what he thought of the idea of installing plexi headlight covers and he frowned and shook his head in a "Don't you dare!" manner.

I think they look great. ....just like the race cars that had them.

I had an experience similar to Daryl's. A few years ago, Sergio Pininfarina was an honorary judge at Pebble Beach. I was able to chat with him, mainly about Dinos, and he was very happy to talk about that model. I then asked him what he thought about the perspex covered headlights. He stopped, frowned, and said "Don't do it. In my opinion it takes away from the original design." It's personal preference, but I agree with him.

Fact: The Dino 206 was launched at the November 1967 Turin Show with headlight covers.

Fact:Begining in 1968 the US DOT outlawed covered headlights.

Fact: Sergio Pininfarina's personal Dino had headlight covers as well as having the front quarter windows deleted. So its hard to argue he did not approve.

I am a IAC/PFA Senior judge and I judge the Dino class at Cavallino ,Concorso Italiano and the FCA nationals. Even though I think that the headlite covers look great on the Dino's it is a point deduction because they were never on the cars from the factory.

I think I was docked half a point last time I was in a National Concours for having headlight covers. I consider it well worth it.
