I have a slight oil leak from the seal on the bottom of the oil filter on my 1975 308 GT4. can anybody tell me the best after market make other than the ones from Ferrari that have the non return valve inside. Also a part number would be helpfull. I can then get one in from a local supplier. Unfortunatly I do not have the time to get over to Ferrari in Egham to get one and I want to use the car at the weekend. Thanks in advance Mark
I've been using the Baldwin B253 on my QV- works great as far as I can tell. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116504&highlight=baldwin
The Baldwin B253 is the best oil filter for the car! Believe it or not, you can get it at virtually any truck supply store (Baldwin is a big maker of oil filters for trucks). You can find a dealer near you by going to the Baldwin site and searching for your zip code. I found a dealer 15 minutes from my house and the filter is about $10. http://www.baldwinfilter.com/ Birdman
Thanks for the responce chaps, the only thing is baldwin are over in the states! I need a common UK company Like Fram, but I know if I have not got a cross referance number they will be stuck with something so old. I suppose I will start making phone calls to the local supplier and see what they say. Thanks again Mark
Mark, here is their # in the UK Baldwin Filters Ltd. Phone: 44-1702-291668 See what they say. There is a Fram that fits, but the general consensus here is that they suck big time. Can you get a UFI locally? They are good too, but pricey. Birdman
Found these in another thread: UFI#2316201/#191993 Baldwin #B253 Fram PH-2804-1 Will all fit. The Baldwin is the one we like here in the USA, but many use the UFI. I don't know about in the UK, but over here the UFI is expensive. The Fram is the least desirable, but if you just gotta have one, it's better than nothing!! Replace it ASAP! Birdman
Thanks Birdman, I have just got off the phone and a rep will call me back and try to sort as a one off order in London. :0) Thanks again. Mark
IMHO, yes. I switched to the Baldwin filter back when UFI had that D-ring failure episode where many of their filters blew the seals. I blew TWO of them before switching to Baldwin. BTW, I just installed a Baldwin air filter on my carbed 308. Nice product. rick
Mark -- The oil filter brand name "Hastings" has come up here a few times as a brand available in your part of the world that is actually made by Baldwin. If you can confirm that they have a Hastings model that has: 1. the internal standpipe, 2. an internal anti-drain back valve, 3. an internal bypass valve, and 4. a rugged outer case, it would be a candidate to consider as a substitute for the Baldwin or UFI IMO (but it sounds like you could easily seperately sell a case or more of the Baldwin B253 at a profit on eBay if you buy a quantity ). FChatter gblue has posted that Hastings LF115 was another cross-reference in this thread: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92017 but he really didn't directly confirm the 4 attributes listed above (and he added that the outer case was a little shorter). Please don't go to any unreasonable hassle, but I'd love more information/confirmation (and it might help other UK FChatters).
Rick hit the nail on the head here. A few years back, UFI had some serious QC issues and a bunch of people had failures of the filters. They have since fixed the issue supposedly, but as far as most fchatters were concerned, their reputation was tarnished. Got a part number?? Birdman
Baldwin air filter for carbed 308's: PA2094 ...available direct from Baldwin, ordered via the website listed in an earlier post.
Rick, you should add that to the parts thread sticky in this section if its not already there. Thanks! Birdman
I use UFI or Mann. Mann are OE for most all of the German auto manufacturers and are of top quality and have anti-drainback valves in them. They should also be easily available to you in the UK, seeing as how they're made in Germany. The Mann part # is W940/1 Cheers, Aaron '82 GTSi '83 400iA
Thanks to you all, I spoke to the rep last night and he will ring again this morning about bringing one down to me. I may change the oil while I am at it, seems a bit silly to spin on a new filter without dropping the oil. Thanks again! Mark
I use a K&N oil filter. The p/n is HP-3001. Most all of the discount or high performance auto parts stores can get them overnight.
I try to find Baldwin here in Norway, but I could not. So I bought a MAN w940/1 today, but it didn't have an anti-drain back valve. Is this necessary? Is it much oil left in the filter a few minutes after you stop the car? It's going to be my first time to change oil in this car. Is it the same filter for dry sump as for wet sump engines?
